Development of sigmoidal en-échelon microfractures in beryl and the role of strain localization evidenced by fluid inclusions
Sosa, Graciela M.; Oriolo, Sebastián; van den Kerkhof, Alfons
A combined fluid inclusion and microstructural study was carried out in beryl crystals from the San Cayetano Nb-Ta-bearing pegmatite (San Luis, Argentina). Primary aqueous-carbonic fluids (T0) were subsequently re-trapped during shearing, resulting in en-échelon microfractures. The more brittle behaviour of beryl compared to quartz makes this mineral more suitable for the preservation of fluid inclusions and microstructures. The primary inclusions T0 are preserved in strain-free domains, whereas the pseudo-secondary T1-to T3-type inclusions occur in domains showing intracrystalline deformation. CO2 was relatively immobile or reacted to form carbonate in early T1-type inclusions, whereas H2O preferentially migrated along microfractures and was trapped as T2-and T3-type inclusions. Short intragranular trails of fluid inclusions, representing en-échelon healed microfractures, resulted from progressive strain localization. Contrary to previous proposals, this new model implies the progressive thickness reduction of intracrystalline micro-shear zones. Besides, hydrolytic weakening linked to dislocation glide is the most likely mechanism to explain the evolution of fluid inclusions, with intracrystalline deformation enhancing anisotropic diffusion. This study highlights the potential of combined fluid inclusion and microstructural studies in order to understand the interaction between fluid activity and deformation. In this way, valuable insights can be provided into the progressive development of overprinted fabrics and low-to medium-temperature deformation mechanisms of minerals.

The objective of this study was to determine the phenotypic and genotypic profiles of STEC strains isolated from children with BD and HUS treated at a pediatric hospital in the city of La Plata in the period 2006-2012, and to establish the clonal relationship of O157:H7 isolates by pulsed field electrophoresis. The percentage of positive samples was 4.9% and 39.2% in patients with BD and HUS, respectively. Seventy-seven STEC strains from 10 different serotypes were isolated, with 100% colony recovery, O157:H7 being the most frequent (71.4%) serotype, followed by O145:NM (15.6%). An average of 98.2% of O157:H7 isolates belonged to biotype C and were sensitive to all the antibiotics tested. All of them (100%) carried genotype stx2, eae, fliCH7, ehxA, iha, efa, toxB, lpfA1-3 and lpfA2-2. When the clonal relationship of the O157:H7 strains was studied, a total of 42 patterns with at least 88% similarity were identified, and 6 clusters with identical profiles were established. The eae-negative isolates belonged to serotypes O59:H19, O102:H6, O174:NM and O174:H21. The strains O59:H19 and O174:H21 were positive for the aggR gene. This study shows that STEC of different serotypes and genotypes circulate in the city of La Plata and surroundings. Despite the genetic diversity observed between the O157:H7 isolates, some were indistinguishable by the subtyping techniques used.
Salinity is a prevailing factor for amelioration of wheat blast by biocontrol agents
Cabot, Catalina; Bosch, Rafael; Martos, Soledad; Poschenrieder, Charlotte; Perello, Analia Edith
Plants exposed to combined abiotic and biotic stress conditions may show enhanced pathogen resistance. Biocontrol agents (BCAs) can further contribute to ameliorate plant responses to these complex situations. In recent years, wheat production has been challenged by the expansion of salt-affected soils as well as by severe outbreaks of emerging diseases such as wheat blast. Here, the role of two BCAs, Pseudomonas stutzeri AN10 and Trichoderma harzianum Th56, was examined in salt-stressed seedlings infected with two Pyricularia oryzae isolates of contrasting aggressiveness. BCAs did not enhance plant tolerance to high salt stress. However, BCAs improved performance of salt-stressed wheat plants infected with the less aggressive Pyricularia isolate. The lower infection in salt-stressed BCAs-treated plants could be due to a salt-induced priming state required to trigger an early expression of plant defence genes.

We report the detection of two exoplanets and a further tentative candidate around the M-dwarf stars Gl96 and Gl617A, based on radial velocity measurements obtained with the SOPHIE spectrograph at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence. Both stars were observed in the context of the SOPHIE exoplanet consortium's dedicated M-dwarf subprogramme, which aims to detect exoplanets around nearby M-dwarf stars through a systematic survey. For Gl96 we present the discovery of a new exoplanet at 73.9 d with a minimum mass of 19.66 earth masses. Gl96 b has an eccentricity of 0.44, placing it among the most eccentric planets orbiting M stars. For Gl617A we independently confirm a recently reported exoplanet at 86.7 d with a minimum mass of 31.29 earth masses. Both Gl96 b and Gl617A b are potentially within the habitable zone, although the high eccentricity of Gl96 b may take it too close to the star at periapsis.

Rossler, Eugenia; Signorini Porchietto, Marcelo Lisandr; Romero Scharpen, Analía; Soto, Lorena Paola; Berisvil, Ayelén Patricia; Zimmermann, Jorge Alberto; Fusari, Marcia Lucia; Olivero, Carolina Raquel; Zbrun, María Virginia; Frizzo, Laureano Sebastian
The objective of this meta-analysis was to summarize available information on the prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant Campylobacter species in humans, food-producing animals, and products of animal origin. A number of multilevel random-effect meta-analysis models were fitted to estimate mean occurrence rate of antimicrobial-resistant thermotolerant Campylobacter and to compare them throughout the years and among the species, food-producing animals (i.e., bovine, pigs, broilers, hen, goat, and sheep), country of origin, sample type, methodology to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility, and the species of Campylobacter. Among the considered antibiotics, thermotolerant Campylobacter showed the highest resistance to tetracycline (pool estimate [PE] = 0.493; 95% CI 0.466-0.519), nalidixic acid (PE = 0.385; 95% CI 0.348-0.423), and ciprofloxacin (PE = 0.376; 95% CI 0.339-0.415). In general, the prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant Campylobacter spp. was higher in hen, broilers, and swine. Campylobacter coli showed a higher prevalence of antimicrobial resistance than Campylobacter jejuni. Independent of the antimicrobial evaluated, the disk diffusion method showed higher prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant Campylobacter than the methods based on the minimum inhibitory concentration estimation. The meta-analysis showed that the prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant Campylobacter is relevant essentially in foods derived from hens and broilers, and it was observed worldwide. The prevalence of this pathogen is of public health importance and the increase in the prevalence of Campylobacter strains resistant to the antimicrobial of choice worsens the situation, hence, national authorities must monitor the situation in each country with the aim to establish the appropriate risk management measures.
Compensated convexity methods for approximations and interpolations of sampled functions in euclidean spaces: Applications to contour lines, sparse data, and inpainting
Zhang, Kewei; Crooks, Elaine; Orlando, Antonio
This paper is concerned with applications of the theory of approximation and interpolation based on compensated convex transforms developed in [K. Zhang, E. Crooks, and A. Orlando, SIAM J. Math. Anal., 48 (2016), pp. 4126--4154]. We apply our methods to (i) surface reconstruction starting from the knowledge of finitely many level sets (or ``contour lines""); (ii) scattered data approximation; (iii) image inpainting. For (i) and (ii) our methods give interpolations. For the case of finite sets (scattered data), in particular, our approximations provide a natural triangulation and piecewise affine interpolation. Prototype examples of explicitly calculated approximations and inpainting results are presented for both finite and compact sets. We also show numerical experiments for applications of our methods to high density salt & pepper noise reduction in image processing, for image inpainting, and for approximation and interpolations of continuous functions sampled on finitely many level sets and on scattered points.

Influence of exchange in NMR pore size/relaxation correlation experiments
Silletta, Emilia Victoria; Franzoni, Maria Belen; Monti, Gustavo Alberto; Acosta, Rodolfo Héctor
The influence of molecular exchange in porous polymeric systems on experiments that simultaneously correlate and determine pore length scales and surface relaxivities is studied. Pore length scales are determined by taking advantage of the internal field gradients generated by the difference in magnetic susceptibility between the polymer matrix and the contained water, namely the Decay Due to the Internal Field experiment. Transverse relaxation is codified in the detection period thus enabling correlation with the pore length. For the hierarchical very well connected porous polymer system, the considerable molecular exchange of water between different environments renders signals in the two-dimensional maps that make the determination of the surface relaxivity a complex problem.
Haloarchaea from the Andean Puna: Biological Role in the Energy Metabolism of Arsenic
Ordoñez, Omar Federico; Rasuk, Maria Cecilia; Soria, Mariana Noelia; Contreras, Manuel; Farias, Maria Eugenia
Biofilms, microbial mats, and microbialites dwell under highly limiting conditions (high salinity, extreme aridity, pH, and elevated arsenic concentration) in the Andean Puna. Only recent pioneering studies have described the microbial diversity of different Altiplano lakes and revealed their unexpectedly diverse microbial communities. Arsenic metabolism is proposed to be an ancient mechanism to obtain energy by microorganisms. Members of Bacteria and Archaea are able to exploit arsenic as a bioenergetic substrate in either anaerobic arsenate respiration or chemolithotrophic growth on arsenite. Only six aioAB sequences coding for arsenite oxidase and three arrA sequences coding for arsenate reductase from haloarchaea were previously deposited in the NCBI database. However, no experimental data on their expression and function has been reported. Recently, our working group revealed the prevalence of haloarchaea in a red biofilm from Diamante Lake and microbial mat from Tebenquiche Lake using a metagenomics approach. Also, a surprisingly high abundance of genes used for anaerobic arsenate respiration (arr) and arsenite oxidation (aio) was detected in the Diamante’s metagenome. In order to study in depth the role of arsenic in these haloarchaeal communities, in this work, we obtained 18 haloarchaea belonging to the Halorubrum genus, tolerant to arsenic. Furthermore, the identification and expression analysis of genes involved in obtaining energy from arsenic compounds (aio and arr) showed that aio and arr partial genes were detected in 11 isolates, and their expression was verified in two selected strains. Better growth of two isolates was obtained in presence of arsenic compared to control. Moreover, one of the isolates was able to oxidize As[III]. The confirmation of the oxidation of arsenic and the transcriptional expression of these genes by RT-PCR strongly support the hypothesis that the arsenic can be used in bioenergetics processes by the microorganisms flourishing in these environments.
Spectral characteristics of road surfaces and eye transmittance: Effects on energy efficiency of road lighting at mesopic levels
Preciado Olvera, Oscar Ulises; Manzano, Eduardo Roberto
In 2010, the CIE published a recommended system for mesopic photometry based on visual performance. According to this system, scenes illuminated at mesopic levels with light sources of high S/P ratio, will produce better visual performance than those illuminated with light sources of a lower S/P ratio at equal photopic luminance. However, there could be other factors affected by SPD that, when quantified, could lead to a contradictory final effect. The scope of this paper was to evaluate how road lighting is affected by the spectral road surface reflectance and by the human eye transmittance as people get older. Our results suggest that the benefits of considering the mesopic vision effect for light sources with high S/P ratios are totally counteracted by the other two effects at mesopic luminances between 0.75 cd/m2 and 1.73 cd/m2 for people between 20 and 60 years of age, depending on the light source and the age of observers.
Acoustic confinement phenomena in oxide multifunctional nanophononic devices
Bruchhausen, Axel Emerico; Lanzillotti Kimura, Norberto Daniel; Jusserand, B.; Soukiassian, A.; Schlom, D. G.; Dekorsy, T.; Fainstein, Alejandro
The engineering of phononic resonances in ferroelectric structures appears as a new knob in the designand realization of novel multifunctional devices. In this work we experimentally study phononicresonators based on insulating (BaTiO 3 , SrTiO 3 ) and metallic (SrRuO 3 ) oxides. We experimentallydemonstrate the confinement of acoustic waves in the 100 GHz frequency range in a phonon nanocavity, the time and spatial beatings resulting from the coupling of two different hybrid nanocavities forming anacoustic molecule, and the direct measurement of Bloch-like oscillations of acoustic phonons in a systemformed by 10 coupled resonators. By means of coherent phonon generation techniques we study thephonon dynamics directly in the time-domain. The metallic SrRuO 3 introduces a local phonon generatorand transducer that allows for the spatial, spectral and time-domain monitoring of the complex generatedwaves. Our results introduce ferroelectric cavity systems as a new tool for the study of complex wavelocalization phenomena at the nanoscale.
Ricardo Piglia, editor
Esposito, Fabio
Fue una actividad que le permitió introducirse en el mundo literario y construir una carrera de escritor al amparo de un nuevo público lector que consumía con avidez los libros e impresos ofrecidos por las editoriales vinculadas con la nueva izquierda.; This essay aims to reconstruct the trajectory of Ricardo Piglia as editor, from his first collaboration for the ephemeral editorial Nueve 64 in the early 1960s to the collection Serie del Recienvenido for Fondo de Cultura Económica, in the later years of his life, and his work as freelance editor in Jorge Álvarez and Tiempo Contemporáneo. His work as editor was more than a means of subsistence when he still could not support himself with book sales. It was an activity that allowed him to introduce himself in the literary world and build a writing career under the wing of a new reading public that readily consumed the books and printed materiales offered by editorials related to the New Left.
Evaluation of classical reinforcement and passive control systems on a reinforced concrete bridge subjected to seismic loading
Nanclares, Germán Aníbal; Ambrosini, Ricardo Daniel; Curadelli, Raul Oscar
In this paper, different strategies are studied with the main objectiveto reduce structural demand and damage of an existent bridge in Mendoza,Argentina, with post-tensioning reinforced concrete girders that are a commonstructural typology in the region. A numerical study was carried out with thispurpose. The numerical model was calibrated against experimentalmeasurements of vibration natural frequencies. The alternatives studied are:a) classical reinforcement of the structural overall stiffness; b) tuned massdampers; c) viscous dampers; d) metallic dampers. The model is subjected toreal near-fault seismic records, thereby obtaining response parameters toevaluate the efficiency of each protective system. The response is evaluated notonly in terms of reduction of displacements, but also in increasing of shearforce in key elements, which is a negative characteristic of some of the systemsstudied. Advantages and disadvantages of each studied system are highlighted.
ℓ-boson stars
Alcubierre, Miguel; Barranco, Juan; Bernal, Argelia; Degollado, Juan Carlos; Diez Tejedor, Alberto; Megevand Politano, Miguel Federico; Núñez, Darío; Sarbach, Olivier
We present new, fully nonlinear numerical solutions to the static, spherically symmetric Einstein-Klein-Gordon system for a collection of an arbitrary odd number N of complex scalar fields with an internal symmetry and no self-interactions. These solutions, which we dub -boson stars, are parametrized by an angular momentum number ℓ =(N - 1)/2, an excitation number n, and a continuous parameter representing the amplitude of the fields. They are regular at every point and possess a finite total mass. For ℓ = 0the standard spherically symmetric boson stars are recovered. We determine their generalizations for ℓ ≤ 0, and show that they give rise to a large class of new static configurations which might have a much larger compactness ratio than stars.

(Fondo Argentino de Cooperación Sur-Sur y Triangular).; This research studies the technical assistance developed by Argentina ́s Ministry of Tourism (MinTur) in South American and Caribbean States between 2009 and 2014. Its specifics aims are: 1. From a theoretical perspective, analysing technical assistance and tourism as sources for building soft power (theory of complex interdependence); 2. Identify foreign actions on technical assistance of the Ministry of Tourism. For that purpose, several sources are checked: Ministry of Tourism news since 2009 (MinTur website); tourist treaties (Treaties Digital Library - Argentine Chancery); and international cooperation projects, particularly those financed by the Argentine Found for South-South and Triangular Cooperation (FO.AR.).
