The aim of the project was to mitigate the impact of debris in coastal zones. During its execution, a clash of interests between distinct local residents (i.e., neighbors, recreational fishermen and fishing operators) with distinct positions in regard to the development of the reserve were evidenced. Given that it is a reserve of multiple uses, in many cases predominates a utilitarian vision, in which conservation is considered an incompatible element with development. Taking this into consideration, the objective of this article is to analyze the visions of local actors about development and conservation. The methodological strategy consists in carrying out in-depth interviews with neighbors, recreational fishermen and fishing operators. From this, an optimal type of conservation for the reserve is proposed, which serves as a reference for others with similar characteristics.

Las escarificaciones mecánica, química y térmica son métodos eficientes para la salida de la dormición física y germinación de semillas; Background and aims: The occurrence of seeds with physical dormancy is an obstacle for the use and management of many plant species. Here, we studied the presence of physical dormancy in mericarps (seed-dispersal units) and seeds, the morphoanatomical structures responsible for physical dormancy, and the effects of possible methods for breaking dormancy in seeds of Malvastrum coromandelianum (Malvaceae). M&M: Imbibition essays were used to confirm the presence of physical dormancy in mericarps and seeds, and the morpho-anatomical seed structure was described by using a scanning electron microscopy. The effects of mechanical, chemical and thermal scarifications on seed germination and seed structure were also evaluated. Results: Mericarps and scarified seeds increased > 160% of their initial weight, whereas intact seeds increased < 40% of their initial weight. The presence of a palisade cell layer in seed coat and a water-gaps complex in the chalazal region were observed. Higher germination percentages and lower t50 were registered after mechanical scarification, followed by chemical and thermal scarifications (dry heat). Chemical and thermal scarifications caused the chalazal cap elimination and the contiguous cracks to form around the chalazal region; whereas the formation of a chalazal blister and its elimination were only observed after chemical scarification. Conclusions: Seeds of M. coromandelianum have physical dormancy. Water enters the seeds through a water-gap complex (Type III compound) located in the chalazal region. Mechanical, chemical and thermal scarifications are effective methods for breaking physical dormancy and increase germination.

The taxonomy of the species assigned to the genus Dallocardia (Cardiidae: Trachycardiinae) recorded from the Argentinean and Magellanic biogeographical provinces was reviewed, revealing that two species are present: Dallocardia muricata (Linnaeus, 1758), well-known as widely distributed along the western Atlantic, and here considered as having its living southernmost limit of distribution in the southern Brazilian coast; and Dallocardia delicatula (EA Smith, 1915), a species resurrected as valid, to which D. manueli (Prado, 1993) is regarded as a junior synonym, occurring along southeastern and southern Brazil, Uruguay and in temperate waters of Argentina. The shells of both species are characterized in detail, differing in outline and rib morphology. Apart from this, a study of the functional anatomy of D. muricata was performed. This species is a moderately rapid shallow burrower from intertidal and subtidal regions in coarse, grassy and muddy sand bottoms, presenting adaptations to live in low-energy environments of sheltered bays and inlets. It has short siphons, with the incurrent crowned with simple, finger-like tentacles, which prevent, but do not block completely excess material and/or large particles from entering the pallial cavity. In addition to presenting a wide pedal gape and the two siphonal openings, D. muricata is the first known cardiid having a temporary fourth mantle gape, this acting as a supplementary incurrent opening, and also serving for expulsion of pseudofaeces. Compared to the labial palps, the ctenidia in this species are large and involved in processing the bulk of material entering the mantle cavity. The densely folded labial palps are indicative that D. muricata deals with moderate to considerable amounts of material. D. muricata is a hermaphroditic bivalve species.

Juri, Yamila Eliana
Nos interesa confrontar esta doctrina con la de un autor contemporáneo a Suárez y clásico por sus aportes a la noción de soberanía de la República como lo fue Jean Bodin, con sus Seis Libros de la República.; is paper outlines Suárez’s doctrine on the exercise of sovereign power in the ideological context of the so–called School of Salamanca, focusing on the feasibility of resistance to it, in cases of tyranny and linking such resistance to the fundamental key of the political community that is the common good, to which the sovereign power is subject to. We are interested in confronting this doctrine with that of an author contemporary to Suarez and considered a classic for his contributions to the notion of sovereignty of the Republic, as was Jean Bodin, with his Six Books of the Republic .

High field magnetoresistance has been studied in epitaxial n-type ZnO:Na and ZnO:Li thin films in a temperature range between 4 K and 150 K. The resulting negative magnetoresistance can be well fitted using a semiempirical model of Khosla and Fischer based on third order contributions to the s-d exchange Hamiltonian. The parameters obtained from this model were carefully analyzed. One of these parameters is related to a ratio between electron mobilities at zero field (a non-exchange scattering mobility and an exchange or spin dependent one ). From Hall effect measurements was obtained, displaying a weak temperature dependence in accordance with highly n-doped ZnO while the extracted exhibits an anomalous T-dependence. On the other hand, our magnetoresistance data cannot be properly fitted using Kawabata´s expression based on a weak-localization model.

Ovulation is considered an inflammatory, cytokine-mediated event.Cytokines, which are recognized as growth factors with immunoregulatory properties, are involved in many cellular processes at the ovarian level. In this sense, cytokines affect fertility and are involved in the development of different ovarian disorders such as bovine cystic ovarian disease (COD). Because it has been previously demonstrated that ovarian cells represent both sources and targets of cytokines, the aim of this study was to examine the expression of several cytokines, including IL-1β, IL-1RA, IL-1RI, IL-1RII, IL-4 and IL-8, in ovarian follicular structures from cows with spontaneous COD. The protein expression of these cytokines was evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Additionally, IL-1β, IL-4 and IL-8concentrations in follicular fluid (FF) and serumwere determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). In granulosa and theca cells, IL-1RI, IL-1RII, IL-1RA and IL-4 expression levels were higher in cystic follicles than in the control dominant follicles. The serumand FF concentrations of IL-1β and IL-4 showed no differences between groups, whereas IL-8 concentration was detected only in FF of cysts from cows with COD.The FF and serumconcentrations of IL-1β and IL-8 showed no significant differences, whereas IL-4 concentration was higher in FF than in serum in both the control and COD groups. These results evidenced an altered expression of cytokines in ovaries of cows with COD that could contribute to the pathogenesis of this disease.

Epidemiology and experimental models have shown a close link between adipose tissue inflammation, systemic inflammation and pulmonary neutrophilic inflammation, which predispose obese patients to pulmonary diseases, obesity-associated co-morbidities and cancer. Increased content and activation of neutrophils in the lung microvasculature, resulting from peripheral activation of neutrophils, and increased adhesion of neutrophils to the lung microvasculature are important factors explaining the increased susceptibility of obese patients towards respiratory diseases and loss of insulin sensitivity. Mechanism-based therapies to break this link are urgently needed to reduce pulmonary damage in obesity, due to the growing prevalence of obesity world-wide. Current research suggests that these approaches should be focused on, one or more of the following: reduction of macrophage activation at the adipose tissue, healthy growing of adipose tissue by induction of Nrf-2, inhibition of NF-?B activation, reduction of circulating neutrophil activation, blocking adhesins/selectins, inhibition of neutrophil activation by targeting NADPH oxidase-2 activation, inhibition of myeloperoxidase activity and scavenging of hypochlorous acid. These strategies are expected to reduce adipose tissue inflammation, peripheral inflammation, pulmonary neutrophilic inflammation and obesity-associated co-morbidities.

Observation of relevant phenomena related with dynamical redox process in a plasmonic heterogeneous-photocatalyst system composed by silver nanoparticles (NPs) around and in contact with amorphous silver chloride NPs are reported by in-situ transmission electron microscopy. During this process, nanobubbles are initially produced inside the silver chloride NPs, which immediately begin to move within the amorphous phase. Besides, silver atoms inside the silver chloride NPs start to migrate out the occupied volume leaving a space behind, which is filled by crystalline regions of silver chloride located between the pre-existing silver NPs. During the observation time, fast-nucleation, movement, growth, and fast-dissolution of silver NPs take place. Specific space correlation with silver mass loss (or gain) when a new NP is formed (or dissolved), was detected in different regions during the reaction. This mass loss (or gain) takes place on certain places of pre-existing silver NPs. All these phenomena were observed for a configuration comprising at least two silver NPs separated few nanometers apart by a silver chloride NP.

The design of an electrochemically addressable nanofluidic diode is proposed, which allows tunable and nanofluidic operations via redox gating under electrochemical control. The fabrication process involves the modification of an asymmetric gold-coated solid-state nanopore with a thin layer of a redox polymer, poly(vinylferrocene) (PVFc). The composite nanochannel acts as a gate electrode by changing the electrochemical state and, consequently, the conversion/switching of ferrocene into ferricenium units upon the application of different voltages. It is shown that the electrochemical input accurately controls the surface charge density of the nanochannel walls with a predictable concomitant effect on the rectification properties. PVFc-based nanofluidic devices are able to discriminate the passage of anionic species through the nanochannel in a qualitative and quantitative manner by simply switching the redox potential of the PVFc layer. Experimental data confirmed that a rapid and reversible modulation of the ionic transport regimes can be easily attained by changing the applied potential. This applied potential plays the role of the gate voltage (Vg) in field-effect transistors (FET), so these nanofluidic channels behave as ionic FETs. Depending on the Vg values, the iontronic behavior can be switched between ohmic and diode-like regimes. We believe that this system illustrates the potential of redox-active polymers integrated into nanofluidic devices as plausible, simple, and versatile platforms to create electrochemically addressable nanofluidic devices for multiple applications.

This paper raises and criticizes the assimilation between leprosy and civil death that historiog raphy usually assumes as a datum of late medieval juridical horizon. The complex relationship between forms of exclusion of the community and the fictions of law is addressed, taking into account the limitations of this type of juridical operations in the late Middle Ages as well as the high ambiguity that characterizes the treatment of lepers in this period.

Physiognomic changes in response to herbivory increase carbon allocation to roots in a temperate grassland of central Argentina
Physiognomic changes in response to herbivory increase carbon allocation to roots in a temperate grassland of central Argentina
Sarquis, Agustín; Pestoni, Sofía; Cingolani, Ana María; Pérez Harguindeguy, Natalia
In most temperate grasslands, cattle grazing can promote physiognomic changes on plant communities, as well as changes in species growth patterns. Through these changes in vegetation, cattle grazing can generate changes in allocation to total, fine and coarse root biomass, which can further affect ecosystem processes. The objective of this work was to evaluate differences in root biomass, in the proportions of fine and coarse root biomass and in root C:N ratio across physiognomies from 0 to 30 cm. We selected plots of grazing lawns (associated to relatively high stocking rates), and plots of thin and thick tussock grasslands (associated to relatively low stocking rates) within the Pampa de Achala system in central Argentina. We found that total, coarse, and fine root biomass were highest in grazing lawns, intermediate in thin tussock grasslands, and lowest in thick tussock grasslands. Thick tussock grasslands showed the highest relative proportion of fine roots while root C:N ratio did not vary among physiognomies. Higher root biomass in lawns was probably caused by the dominance of species that allocate more biomass to roots than to shoots, as well as by the complementarity of soil resource extraction and by compensatory root growth in response to herbivory. In addition, and contrary to what was expected based on their above-ground attributes, thick tussock grasslands presented higher proportion of fine roots, which suggests a more acquisitive resource use strategy. However, root C:N from thick tussock grasslands did not differ from other physiognomies which might indicate there are not clear differences in below-ground resource use strategies. Our results show that grassland root biomass in this study system can increase in patches associated to higher cattle grazing due to changes in plant composition and physiognomy, while changes in root quality seem to be uncoupled from the above-ground traits.
Ethnozoology in the mountains. What does the cognitive salience of wild animals tell us?
Ethnozoology in the mountains. What does the cognitive salience of wild animals tell us?
Wajner, Matias; Tamburini, Daniela Maria; Zamudio, Fernando
In recent times, ethnobiology has revived interest in cognitive aspects of humans' communities. A concept commonly used in this area is cognitive salience. In this paper we assess the wild animal salience meaning for the rural people from an area of the mountain range of the Cordoba province (Argentina). We also analyzed the relationship of cultural and ecological factors over wild animal domain salience. The values of cognitive salience, perception and cultural value were obtained by means of free lists to 16 collaborators, while semistructured interviews were used to inquire about local ecological knowledge and ease of observation about wild animals. The interdependence between the five variables elaborated was analyzed through a Principal Components Regression. The results show a qualitative relationship between Cognitive Salience and Cultural Value and a significant correlation between Cognitive Salience and Local Ecological Knowledge. Ease of Observation did not correlate with Cognitive Salience, but show a significant relationship with the Perceived Abundance. The results suggest a complex network of factors that are modeling the cognitive salience and local perceptions over wild animals. In our findings, highlight the Cultural Value given to harmful animals which reflects an increasing pattern in the region, the conflict between rural people and wild animals. In turn a mutual influences and causal feedback loops between cognitive salience and an ecological factor, the Perceived abundance, is proposed. Investigations over cognition and about how people perceived nature can give us an idea of how they act in it, a compelling factor when it comes to cultural and biological conservation issues.

Background: Medications in which the risk of adverse events exceeds the expectations of clinical benefits are called potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs). To identify the use of PIMs in elderly patients, the most commonly used tool is the Beers criteria, defined for the population of the United States. Recently, a consensus panel of Argentine experts developed the first Latin American tool, called the IFAsPIAM List. Objective: The present study aimed to identify PIM prescriptions in elderly outpatients, to estimate the prevalence of PIMs, and to evaluate their possible relation with polymedication and gender and age of the patients. Also, we aimed to compare the results obtained by using the Beers criteria and the IFAsPIAM List. Setting: Ten community pharmacies of Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted between February and September 2015. Data were acquired from 56952 prescriptions prescribed to 2231 patients aged 65 years old or older. To detect the use of PIMs, we used two tools: the Beers criteria and the IFAsPIAM List. Main outcome measure: The prevalence of PIM use according to the Beers criteria and the IFAsPIAM List. Results: The monthly average of medications dispensed per patient was 4.35±2.18 and 42.27% of the patients presented major polymedication. The prevalence of PIMs was 72.75% according to the Beers criteria and 71.13% according to the IFAsPIAM List (Kappa coefficient k=0.72), and was significantly higher in patients with major polymedication, older than 75 years old, and females. The most frequent PIMs prescribed were anxiolytics, analgesics and antipsychotics. Conclusions: The IFAsPIAM List is an effective tool to evaluate the prescription of PIMs in the elderly. The results showed a high prevalence of PIMs with a multicausal origin and directly associated with polymedication. As clarified by the authors of the IFAsPIAM List, the criteria specified in the list do not substitute the clinical evaluation of each patient.

We emphasize that a high frequency of bifaces that were modified and used as projectile point supports stand out in the artefactual set. Analysis about their design allow us to identify the presence of morphological types recognizable since the Early Holocene. Through our results, we argue that Abra del Toro workshop became a node where hunters-gatherers participated since millennia in their training, building a sector of the landscape where they produce and discard their tools. At a regional scale, this paper is an imput for the comprehension about the ways of inhabiting the landscape by the first prehistoric occupations in the Yocavil valley. While at an artefactual and site scale allows us to know the production processes and the decisions of the artisans in the manufacture of lithic artifacts

In this work, the solubility of thymoquinone, R-(+)-pulegone and 1-octen-3-ol in supercritical CO 2 is determined in a range of conditions typical of supercritical fluid processes such as extraction, fractionation and impregnation. These compounds were selected based in their insecticidal activity which may enable to apply them as biopesticides. Solubility was measured using a semicontinuos method in the temperature range of 45?65 °C and pressure of 8?12 MPa, at a CO 2 flowrate of 0.05?0.10 g/min, which was verified to be low enough to ensure saturation. Solubilities were predicted using the Group Contribution Equation of State (GC-EoS) and compared to the experimental results, with a good agreement. Consistency of the data was tested using the density-based Chrastil equation.
