The labour process and workers’ rights at Mercado Libre: Hiding exploitation through regulation in the digital economy

CONICET Digital -

The labour process and workers’ rights at Mercado Libre: Hiding exploitation through regulation in the digital economy Atzeni, Maurizio E-commerce platforms such as, most famously, Amazon use digitalised production systems in their warehouses. In this article we examine how such digitalised systems impact upon the labour process, the organisation of work and working condition in the warehouse of Mercado Libre in Argentina, the largest e-commerce platform there and in Latin America. In many respects, this case is aligned with the evidence emerging from similar studies on Amazon. The ubiquitous combination of algorithmic management with discretionary human management has limited the sphere of workers’ autonomy and spaces of resistance, increased control to virtually any productive or unproductive time spent by workers in the warehouse and imposed stressful working conditions on workers, often with negative implications for health and safety. These conditions of exploitation common to digitalised workplaces have, however, been strengthened by the company’s hiring strategy, based extensively on labour broking, on the high turnover of a young workforce, and the strategic use of the existing institutional regulatory framework and formal trade union representation to buffer management from workers’ complaints. In this sense it is not regulation as such that is the key to better working conditions in the digitalised labour process but rather how that regulatory framework is effectively used and contested by workers’ struggles on the ground to get concessions.

Unmasking hidden genetic, vocal, and size variation in the Masked Flowerpiercer along the Andes supports two species separated by Northern Peruvian Low

Unmasking hidden genetic, vocal, and size variation in the Masked Flowerpiercer along the Andes supports two species separated by Northern Peruvian Low Martínez Gómez, Silvia Catalina; Lara, Carlos Esteban; Remsen, J. V.; Brumfield, Robb T.; Cuervo, Andrés M. La divergencia genética entre poblaciones aisladas no siempre se refleja en diferencias fenotípicas. We investigated the genetic and phenotypic differentiation in Diglossa cyanea (Thraupidae; Masked Flowerpiercer), a widely distributed species in the tropical Andes. We found strong evidence for 2 main lineages separated by the Marañón River valley in the Northern Peruvian Low (NPL). These 2 lineages show a deep sequence divergence in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA; ~6.7% uncorrected p-distance, n = 122), spectral frequency and song structure (with exclusive final whistles in southern populations, n = 88), and wing length (the northern populations are smaller, n = 364). The 2 divergent D. cyanea mitochondrial lineages were not sister to each other, suggesting a possible paraphyly with respect to D. caerulescens (Bluish Flowerpiercer) that remains to be tested with nuclear genomic data. No genetic variation, size difference, or song structure was observed within the extensive range of the southern group (from the NPL to central Bolivia) or within all sampled northern populations (from the NPL to Venezuela). These vocal differences appear to have consequences for song discrimination, and species recognition, according to a previously published playback experiment study. We propose that the southern taxon be elevated to species rank as D. melanopis, a monotypic species (with the proposed name Whistling Masked-Flowerpiercer). In turn, we provide a redefinition of D. cyanea (Warbling Masked-Flowerpiercer), which is now restricted to the northern half of the tropical Andes as a polytypic species with 3 subspecies (tovarensis, obscura, and cyanea). Based on our results, the subspecies dispar should be treated as a junior synonym of cyanea. Our study highlights the need to continue amassing complementary data sets from field observations, experiments, and collection-based assessments to better characterize the evolutionary history, biogeography, bioacoustics, and taxonomy of Neotropical montane birds.

Reversal of biological age in multiple rat organs by young porcine plasma fraction

Young blood plasma is known to confer beneficial effects on various organs in mice and rats. However, it was not known whether plasma from young adult pigs rejuvenates old rat tissues at the epigenetic level; whether it alters the epigenetic clock, which is a highly accurate molecular biomarker of aging. To address this question, we developed and validated six different epigenetic clocks for rat tissues that are based on DNA methylation values derived from n = 613 tissue samples. As indicated by their respective names, the rat pan-tissue clock can be applied to DNA methylation profiles from all rat tissues, while the rat brain, liver, and blood clocks apply to the corresponding tissue types. We also developed two epigenetic clocks that apply to both human and rat tissues by adding n = 1366 human tissue samples to the training data. We employed these six rat clocks to investigate the rejuvenation effects of a porcine plasma fraction treatment in different rat tissues. The treatment more than halved the epigenetic ages of blood, heart, and liver tissue. A less pronounced, but statistically significant, rejuvenation effect could be observed in the hypothalamus. The treatment was accompanied by progressive improvement in the function of these organs as ascertained through numerous biochemical/physiological biomarkers, behavioral responses encompassing cognitive functions. An immunoglobulin G (IgG) N-glycosylation pattern shift from pro- to anti-inflammatory also indicated reversal of glycan aging. Overall, this study demonstrates that a young porcine plasma-derived treatment markedly reverses aging in rats according to epigenetic clocks, IgG glycans, and other biomarkers of aging.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative Staphylococcus from school dining rooms in Argentina González, Juliana; Hernandez, Luciana Belén; Tabera, Anahi; Bustamante, Ana Victoria; Sanso, Andrea Mariel Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) constitutes an important cause for concern in the field of public health, and the role of the food chain in the transmission of this pathogen and in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has not yet been defined. The objectives of this work were to isolate and characterize coagulase-positive Staphylococcus (CoPS) and coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CoNS), particularly S. aureus, from school dining rooms located in Argentina. From 95 samples that were obtained from handlers, inert surfaces, food, and air in 10 establishments, 30 Staphylococcus strains were isolated. Four isolates were S. aureus, and the remaining ones (N = 26) belonged to 11 coagulase-negative species (CoNS). The isolates were tested for susceptibility to nine antibiotics. The presence of genes encoding toxins (luk-PV, sea, seb, sec, sed, and see), adhesins (icaA, icaD), and genes that confer resistance to methicillin (mecA) and vancomycin (vanA) was investigated. The resistance rates measured for penicillin, cefoxitin, gentamicin, vancomycin, erythromycin, clindamycin, levofloxacin, trimethoprim–sulfamethoxazole, and tetracycline were 73%, 30%, 13%, 3%, 33%, 17%, 13%, 7%, and 7% of the isolates, respectively. Seventeen AMR profiles were detected, and 11 isolates were multidrug resistant (MDR). Seven methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus isolates were detected in the hands of handlers from four establishments, two of them were MRSA. Two S. aureus isolates presented icaA and icaD, another one, only icaD. The gene vanA was found in two isolates. In relation to S. aureus, resistance to vancomycin but not to gentamicin was detected. School feeding plays a key role in the nutrition of children, and the consumption of food contaminated with MRSA and vancomycin-resistant S. aureus (VRSA) can be a serious threat to health. In particular, it was detected that the handlers were the source of MRSA, VRSA, MR-CoNS (methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative Staphylococcus), and MDR isolates. The results obtained indicate that the vigilance of this pathogen in school dining rooms should be extreme.

In the study of social interactions, issues such as territory and territoriality are implicit. Territories are a fragmentation of the space product of the set of relationships that are interwoven daily between humans and between them and the natural environment. So, as a social construction, there is an implicit diversity of territories that may operate simultaneously. In a first approach towards the analysis of the lithic material from Cueva de Cristóbal, in the locality of Aguilar, in the Puna of Jujuy, I registered that the set presented a great diversity of raw materials, both local and non-local, which allows me to investigate the question of social interactions and territorialities. With this example, the objective is to explore the diversity of aspects that the same physical space can present, to investigate territorial management, in this specific case, in the sense of handling raw materials.

The constructivist paradigm suggests that the teaching process must be dynamic, with the active participation of the learner. In this context, the decisions made in the classroom by the teacher have a direct impact on the teaching-learning process. This work discloses the result of the application of dichotomous keys in the Geology subject. Geology is part of the study plan of three careers of the Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences and Agriculture of the Universidad Nacional del Nordeste. Year after year, we observed the difficulty of the students to be able to identify minerals and different types of rocks, the decision was made to look for a visual didactic tool that helps the students in this process. For this, dichotomous keys were adapted taking into account the available geological material and the needs of the students, resulting in four types of keys adapted to the region. As a result of its application, we observed greater independence of the students in the identification of the geological material provided in the practical classes and better performance in the evaluations that require recognition of this type of material.

Sensory profile of gluten-free breads based on alternative commercial flours

CONICET Digital -

Sensory profile of gluten-free breads based on alternative commercial flours Irigoytia, Karen Florencia; Parodi, Maria Belen; Esposito, Nancy Noemi; de Escalada Pla, Marina Francisca; Genevois, Carolina Elizabeth Gluten-free breads (GFB) are based mainly on refined flours, being characterised by a poor nutritional profile. The use of alternative flours, rich in protein and dietary fibre in the design of GFB could improve either technological or nutritional properties. The objective of the study was to evaluate the global differences/similarities, and the overall acceptability of GFB formulated with alternative flours in regular consumers and with gluten-related disorders. A projective mapping and hedonic test were used to describe the sensory profile and to assess the liking of products in untrained panellists (N=34). GFB were formulated using a traditional recipe, where 20% of refined flours were replaced by: brown rice, rice bran, lupin, millet, carob, quinoa, sorghum, teff or buckwheat. The hydration level and fermentation time were previously optimised to maximise the GFB specific volume. The relationship between products and descriptors was analysed by a multiple factor analysis (MFA) using XLSTAT software. The results showed four different groups of GFB based on (1) carob which was described as acid, (2) millet as white crumb, (3) rice bran, sorghum, lupin and buckwheat as crumbly and smelly, and (4) teff, quinoa and brown rice as sweet, springy and crispy. GFB received a punctuation of 5.9-7.3 in a 9-point scale, being the GFB based on carob flour the less accepted (2.9±2.5). These flours could contribute to enhancing the nutritional profile and could be a useful tool for the food industry. GFB formulations should be optimised for improving the consumer acceptability according to the flour selected.

Asymptotic profiles for inhomogeneous heat equations with memory

Beyond AdS2/dCFT1: insertions in two Wilson loops

CONICET Digital -

Beyond AdS2/dCFT1: insertions in two Wilson loops Correa, Diego Hernán; Faraggi, Alberto; Mück, Wolfgang; Pando Zayas, Leopoldo A.; Silva, Guillermo Ariel We consider two-point correlators of local operator insertions in a system of two Wilson-Maldacena loops in N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on both sides of the AdS/CFT correspondence. On the holographic side the correlator of two Wilson-Maldacena loops is given by a classical string world-sheet which in one phase connects two asymptotically AdS2 regions and in the other phase is given by two disconnected AdS2 caps; this configuration breaks supersymmetry as well as conformal invariance. We present a complete systematic account of the string world-sheet fluctuations, including the fermionic sector, and study the behavior of the holographic two-point correlators. On the field theory side we compute certain two-point correlators of local operator insertions by resumming sets of ladder diagrams. Our results demonstrate the efficacy of previously developed methods in tackling this non-conformal, non-susy regime.

Eocene paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic events recognized by assemblages of dinoflagellate cysts in the Southwest Atlantic Ocean

CONICET Digital -

Eocene paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic events recognized by assemblages of dinoflagellate cysts in the Southwest Atlantic Ocean Premaor, Eduardo; Ferreira, Elizabete P.; Guerstein, Gladys Raquel; Alves de Souza, Paulo Variations in the relative frequencies between cosmopolitan dinoflagellate cysts and Antarctic assemblage species indicate temperature changes and variations of ocean currents during the Paleogene. This study is based on the analysis of 23 samples from two stratigraphic intervals from the Well BP-01 (Imbé Formation), drilled by in the Pelotas Basin offshore. We identified 66 dinoflagellate cyst taxa, 47 of them belong to the Order Gonyaulacales and 19 to the Order Peridiniales. The relative abundance data highlight two different dinoflagellate ecogroups represented by Apectodinium and Enneadocysta in the intervals A and B, respectively. The level with the highest percentages of Apectodinium recorded in the Calcareous Nannofossil Zone N-410 (Ypresian), suggest that the Apectodinium maximum represents the Early Eocene Maximum Thermal Event (EMT-2). Enneadocysta Acmes registered near the Bartonian/Priabonian boundary, can be correlated with a drop in sea surface temperature that occurred after the Mid-Eocene Climatic Optimum. Dinoflagellate occurrences suggest deposition in open sea conditions during the transgressive phase. The P/G ratio does not reach significant values in the analyzed intervals, indicating low dissolved nutrient concentrations.

The aim of this study is to detect the presence of deontic reasoning and dialogic arguments in rulings of the Argentine Supreme Court of Justice. To this end, a descriptive study was conducted to detect and compare logical and extra-logical factors in 157 years of rulings published by the highest Argentine court. An algorithm was applied to analyze all the rulings published by the Court between 1865 and 2022. Specific groups of linguistic markers were constructed. The evidence showed that the aforementioned Court reasons and argues, in coherence with theories focused on logical factors, on the one hand, and on extra-logical factors, on the other hand. The need for a new psychological theory that integrates both factors in the same explanatory model is deduced.

General relativistic pulsations of ultra-massive ZZ Ceti stars

General relativistic pulsations of ultra-massive ZZ Ceti stars Corsico, Alejandro Hugo; Boston, S Reece; Althaus, Leandro Gabriel; Kilic, Mukremin; Kepler, S. O.; Camisassa, María Eugenia; Torres, Santiago Ultra-massive white dwarf stars are currently being discovered at a considerable rate, thanks to surveys such as the Gaia space mission. These dense and compact stellar remnants likely play a major role in type Ia supernova explosions. It is possible to probe the interiors of ultra-massive white dwarfs through asteroseismology. In the case of the most massive white dwarfs, General Relativity could affect their structure and pulsations substantially. In this work, we present results of relativistic pulsation calculations employing relativistic ultra-massive ONe-core white dwarf models with hydrogen-rich atmospheres and masses ranging from 1.29 to 1.369M⊙ with the aim of assessing the impact of General Relativity on the adiabatic gravity (g)-mode period spectrum of very-high mass ZZ Ceti stars. Employing the relativistic Cowling approximation for the pulsation analysis, we find that the critical buoyancy (Brunt-Väisälä) and acoustic (Lamb) frequencies are larger for the relativistic case, compared to the Newtonian case, due to the relativistic white dwarf models having smaller radii and higher gravities for a fixed stellar mass. In addition, the g-mode periods are shorter in the relativistic case than in the Newtonian computations, with relative differences of up to ~50 % for the highest-mass models (1.369M⊙) and for effective temperatures typical of the ZZ Ceti instability strip. Hence, the effects of General Relativity on the structure, evolution, and pulsations of white dwarfs with masses larger than ~1.29M⊙ cannot be ignored in the asteroseismological analysis of ultra-massive ZZ Ceti stars.

The calcium-dependent protein kinase 1 (CDPK1) inhibitor BKI-1748 has shown a promising safety profile for its use in humans and a good efficacy against Toxoplasma gondii infection in vitro and in mouse models. The rates of congenital infection and foetal damage in sheep seem to mimic the situation in human toxoplasmosis more closely than those in mouse models. Ten doses of BKI-1748 given every other day orally in sheep at 15 mg/kg exhibited therapeutic plasma levels for 23 days and no systemic or pregnancy-related toxicity was observed. In sheep experimentally infected at 90 days of pregnancy with a T. gondii oocyst dose which was lethal for all foetuses, the BKI-1748 treatment administered from 48 hours after infection led to complete protection against abortion and congenital infection. In addition, compared to infected/untreated sheep, treated sheep showed a drastically lower rectal temperature increase, higher IFNγ levels and none showed IgG seroconversion throughout the study. In conclusion, BKI-1748 treatment in pregnant sheep starting at 48 hours after infection was fully effective against congenital toxoplasmosis.

This paper presents the didactic analysis (Steiman, 2010) of a Vocal Education class at the UPC. From a transdisciplinary perspective, located in the disciplinary and experiential boundaries in which we place ourselves as authors, we identify problematic nuclei that revolve around: space-time-subjects involved in the pedagogical process of the class, and in the decisions and assumptions that the teacher in charge carried out. That is, in those components that make up the "aesthetic configurations" of the class (Roldán, 2022). Methodologically, we took up again the observation records of the class and the exchanges we had with the teacher, also the author of this work, and we were guided by the conjectural script she had previously made and by her teaching project. From the disciplinary boundaries, between communication, semiotics and didactics, we propose our analysis of the classroom chronotope, a space-time where the cell phone is the protagonist although our eyes do not see it, also crossed by a culture of connectivity (Van Dijk, 2016).

This article seeks to analyze the process of in(in)securitization of health mobilities defined as "transplant tourism.” It focusses on the emergence and circulation of the "transplant tourism" category, as well as certain political uses of the concept in transplant and migration regulations in Argentina. It argues that "transplant tourism" was constructed as a problem of (in)security associated with the dangers and threats posed by certain types of mobilities to the "national order" of transplants and “international security,” because of its association with illicit forms of organ extraction and commercialization. The article uses a qualitative methodology combining the analysis of documentary sources with interviews with government officials in the Argentinean context.

Por último, se presentan algunas consideraciones sobre esa implementación y los efectos que podría tener en el mediano y largo plazo.; Energy services are considered basic for homes from the point of view of the human right to adequate housing (art. 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights). At the beginning of 2022, Argentina announced a debt refinancing agreement with the IMF, which established the removal of subsidies for these services. At the beginning of April, the Subsecretary of Energy Planning of the Nation issued a technical report anticipating a "tariff segmentation", and two weeks later, Salta was the first jurisdiction to apply that criteria to regulate the invoices issued by the provincial distributor.
