Who I am, where I come from, who are the people who brought me to the world, are questions that, in Western culture, historically and traditionally have been considered essential for the human being and for those who start searching for their origins. Information about biological origins has been managed in different ways around the world and often, fundamentally in cases where children are not raised by those who engendered them, has been hidden and silenced for a long time. Based on a research with activists in Argentina who are looking to find out about their origins, this article describes and analyzes various forms of activism that these people have been carrying out around the world to get their right to know their origins recognized. Although the description reveals the local singularities of each organization, the analysis of this global movement allows us to identify regularities in the ways in which these activists organize their demands where the virtual, the intimate and the political dimensions become central.

Palabras clave: Adquisición de la lectura; conciencia morfológica; conciencia fonológica; intervención temprana; vocabulario.; The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of two interventions (phonological awareness (PA) only versus a combined intervention on PA, vocabulary, and morphological awareness (MA)) in Argentinean kindergarteners from low SES on their reading comprehension at the end of grade one. Participants were 129 Spanish monolingual, Argentinian children from low SES backgrounds. Using a pre-posttest quasi-experimental design, we compared three conditions: (a) intervention on PA only, (b) combined intervention (PA + vocabulary + MA), (c) control group (business as usual). Kindergarten teachers implemented the interventions with support (for small group intensive work) by speech and language pathologists, over a period of three months (22 hours total). Participating children were assessed on vocabulary, letter-word identification, PA, and MA in kindergarten (before and after the intervention) and in grade one, and on reading comprehension in grade one only. Repeated ANOVAS indicated that children receiving the combined intervention outperformed children in the PA only intervention on vocabulary and reading comprehension and the control group in MA and reading. Findings suggest that the combined intervention was the most effective. These findings have theoretical implications for a more comprehensive developmental model of reading in Spanish, as well as practical implications for teaching and assessment of literacy skills in young, monolingual Spanish-speaking children from low-socioeconomic backgrounds.

This paper analyzes FTIR (infrared spectroscopy by Fourier transform) spectra of type I collagen samples extracted from modern and archaeological bones of guanaco (Lama guanicoe) and Pampas deer (Ozotoceros bezoarticus) with varying degrees of protein conservation and, in some cases, external organic input. C:N atomic ratio, C%, N%, and collagen yield were determined. Four transmittance ratios from the spectra were analyzed: Amide III/Amide I, Amide III/Proline, Proline/Amide I, 1080 cm-1/Amide I, which we propose be used for determining collagen quality. Since FTIR analysis is very versatile, it can be used as a simple decision-making tool, it is inexpensive, rapid, and available, we argue that establishing quality parameters with this method would allow us to determine collagen preservation in archaeological samples before sending them for isotopic and radiometric analyses and select the best samples.

Nematode parasites in the lizards Salvator rufescens, Teius teyou (Teiidae) and Homonota underwoodi (Phyllodactylidae) from the Monte Region in Central-Western Argentina

Nematode parasites in the lizards Salvator rufescens, Teius teyou (Teiidae) and Homonota underwoodi (Phyllodactylidae) from the Monte Region in Central-Western Argentina Castillo, Gabriel Natalio; González Rivas, Cynthia Jesica; Acosta, Juan Carlos We studied the parasite fauna in three lizard species, Salvator rufescens, Teius teyou (both Teiidae) and Homonota underwoodi (Phyllodactylidae) in Encón locality, province of San Juan, Argentina. We analyzed gastrointestinal contents and estimated ecological indicators of parasites. Presence of three parasitic nematode taxa was determined in the stomach: Physaloptera sp. and Physaloptera retusa (Physalopteridae), and Pharyngodon sp. (Pharyngodonidae). Our parasitic studies are the first for these hosts in Argentina and contribute to current knowledge of the parasite fauna in reptiles.

The extraordinary demand for raw materials from the People's Republic of China led to an unusual increase in commodity imports. However, after the 2008 world food crisis, China favored Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) as a mechanism for guaranteeing its domestic food supply. As a result, agriculture became a priority within the Going Out strategy. Despite the abrupt disembarkation of Chinese FDI into primary-extractive sectors in Argentina, the academic literature focused limited attention on the advance of Chinese capital in agriculture. This article analyzes the way in which China deployed its agricultural FDI strategy in Argentina between 2010 and 2016. A qualitative methodology is used based on a survey of Chinese initiatives in Argentina based on news coverage, academic publications and government sources. This has led to the identification of three modalities within the strategy in which investments were directed to land, to agricultural services and to the agricultural value chain.

In order to account for it, after defining the characteristics of this genre, and to mark the key transformations that it has presented throughout history, the work is introduced in three dissimilar political traditions: Marxist, liberal, and the one articulated by Arendt, to trace in the language of these the different criticisms of utopia. In this sense, we observe that while Marxist thought attacks the lack of scientific rigor of utopias, the liberals discover how oppressive this genre is for individual liberties and the private world, and Arendt and post-foundationalists warn that the utopian world only is possible with the disappearance of the political.

Realistic indirect spin interactions between magnetic impurities on a metallic Pb(110) surface

Realistic indirect spin interactions between magnetic impurities on a metallic Pb(110) surface Rébola, Alejandro Federico; Lobos, Alejandro Martin Motivated by recent experiments, here we study the indirect interactions between magnetic impurities deposited on top of a clean Pb(110) surface, induced by the underlying conduction electrons. Our approach makes use of ab initio calculations to characterize the clean Pb(110) surface and avoids self-consistency, a feature that greatly reduces the computational cost. In combination with second-order perturbation theory in the microscopic s-d exchange parameter Jsd between a magnetic adatom and the conduction electrons, we are able to systematically derive the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida, the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya, and the anisotropic tensor interactions emerging at the Pb(110) surface between magnetic impurities. The only adjustable parameter is Jsd, which is fitted to reproduce the experiments. Our results show important anisotropy effects arising both from the rectangular geometry of the (110) unit cell and from the strong Rashba spin-orbit interaction due to the broken inversion symmetry at the Pb(110) surface. In addition to Pb(110), the characterization of the indirect spin interactions described here could be extended to other realistic metallic surfaces for weakly coupled impurities and would enable us to fabricate atomic-size nanostructures with engineered interactions and on-demand magnetic properties, anticipating useful applications in nanotechnology.

Epidemiología, consumo de recursos y costos del manejo médico de la Hepatitis C en Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay y Venezuela; Epidemiology, Use of resources, and Costs of Medical Management of Hepatitis C in Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay, and Venezuela Bardach, Ariel Esteban; Hernández Vásquez, Akram; Palacios, Alfredo; Calderón, María; Soto, Natalie; Balan, Dario; Augustovski, Federico Ariel Objective: To describe the epidemiology, the consumption of resources and the relevant costs in the management of hepatitis C in four Latin American countries: Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay and Venezuela. Study design: Bibliographic review, study of costs and elicitation by experts Methods: A literature search was carried out to collect epidemiological and cost data for the management of the disease. Information was additionally elicited with hepatologists from each country using the modified Delphi Panel technique. For the estimation of costs, the perspective of the health system was adopted. The direct medical costs of the different stages associated with the natural history of the disease were considered through micro-costing. Results: Extensive epidemiological and economic information is provided for the four countries under study. The age range between 40 and 60 years was the most affected. The frequency of genotypes showed a predominance of genotype 1 (68 to 88%), genotype 1b having been reported as the most prevalent in Argentina and Colombia and 1a in Uruguay and Venezuela. The costs of drug regimens, associated health events and adverse events present important differences in the four selected countries of Latin America. Conclusion: Hepatitis C presents a high burden of disease in the countries under study, and its management imposes significant costs on health systems.

The Cost-Effectiveness of Continuous Versus Intermittent Renal Replacement Therapies in Acute Kidney Injury: Perspective of the Social Services for the Elderly in Argentina

The Cost-Effectiveness of Continuous Versus Intermittent Renal Replacement Therapies in Acute Kidney Injury: Perspective of the Social Services for the Elderly in Argentina Garay, Osvaldo Ulises; Palacios, Alfredo; Pichón-riviere, Andres; Augustovski, Federico Ariel; García Martí, Sebastián; Hernández Vásquez, Akram; López, Elena Tapia; Rosa Diez, Guillermo Javier; Bardach, Ariel Esteban Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a public health problem that affects millions of hospitalized patients worldwide. In Argentina, evidence suggests that its incidence has risen in recent years. When severe, AKI may require a renal replacement therapy (RRT) where continuous RRT (CRRT) and intermittent RRT (IRRT) are plausible options for patients in the intensive care unit. Objective: To evaluate the cost utility of CRRT versus IRRT for the National Institute of Social Services for Retirees and Pensioners, the largest social security health insurance for elders in Argentina. Methods: This was a model-based cost-utility analysis. Long-term costs and health outcomes were estimated for a hypothetical cohort with a Markov model. Parameters used were obtained from published literature and validated with local experts. Local costs were estimated and expressed in $AR of 2016. Several sensitivity analyses were run to analyze the impact of uncertainty on results. Results: Continuous RRT dominated IRRT by cumulating over the model more quality-adjusted life years and less costs. Total discounted quality-adjusted life years for both cohorts were 1049 and 1034, respectively, and total costs were $95 362 and $103 871. Cost-effectiveness (CE) results reflect these differences in favor of CRRT with a deterministic cost-saving incremental CE ratio and a probability of CRRT being CE of 65.4%, considering a CE threshold of 1 gross domestic product per capita. Conclusions: Continuous RRT for patients with AKI eligible for CRRT or IRRT would probably be a cost-effective intervention for the National Institute of Social Services for Retirees and Pensioners’ view. Nevertheless, there is considerable uncertainty around results, mainly due to the lack of adequate controlled studies and local data on the prognosis of these patients in Argentina.

The shift of obesity burden by socioeconomic status between 1998 and 2017 in Latin America and the Caribbean: a cross-sectional series study

The shift of obesity burden by socioeconomic status between 1998 and 2017 in Latin America and the Caribbean: a cross-sectional series study Jiwani, Safia S; Carrillo Larco, Rodrigo M.; Hernández Vásquez, Akram; Barrientos Gutiérrez, Tonatiuh; Basto Abreu, Ana; Gutierrez, Laura; Irazola, Vilma; Nieto Martínez, Ramfis; Nunes, Bruno P.; Parra, Diana C.; Miranda, J. Jaime Background: The burden of obesity differs by socioeconomic status. We aimed to characterise the prevalence of obesity among adult men and women in Latin America and the Caribbean by socioeconomic measures and the shifting obesity burden over time. Methods: We did a cross-sectional series analysis of obesity prevalence by socioeconomic status by use of national health surveys done between 1998 and 2017 in 13 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. We generated equiplots to display inequalities in, the primary outcome, obesity by wealth, education, and residence area. We measured obesity gaps as the difference in percentage points between the highest and lowest obesity prevalence within each socioeconomic measure, and described trends as well as changing patterns of the obesity burden over time. Findings: 479 809 adult men and women were included in the analysis. Obesity prevalence across countries has increased over time, with distinct patterns emerging by wealth and education indices. In the most recent available surveys, obesity was most prevalent among women in Mexico in 2016, and the least prevalent among women in Haiti in 2016. The largest gap between the highest and lowest obesity estimates by wealth was observed in Honduras among women (21·6 percentage point gap), and in Peru among men (22·4 percentage point gap), compared with a 3·7 percentage point gap among women in Brazil and 3·3 percentage points among men in Argentina. Urban residents consistently had a larger burden than their rural counterparts in most countries, with obesity gaps ranging from 0·1 percentage points among women in Paraguay to 15·8 percentage points among men in Peru. The trend analysis done in five countries suggests a shifting of the obesity burden across socioeconomic groups and different patterns by gender. Obesity gaps by education in Mexico have reduced over time among women, but increased among men, whereas the gap has increased among women but remains relatively constant among men in Argentina. Interpretation: The increase in obesity prevalence in the Latin American and Caribbean region has been paralleled with an unequal distribution and a shifting burden across socioeconomic groups. Anticipation of the establishment of obesity among low socioeconomic groups could provide opportunities for societal gains in primordial prevention. Funding: None.

We present the first results of the ongoing research in Timón Cruz, in the Puna of Jujuy, focusing on the evidence of human installation in the area which would have been related to gold mining. The tasks performed to date include prospections, superficial recollections, general record of the architecture, preliminary analysis of collected material and study of written records. Historical data allow us to state that the history of this locality is marked by the mining development of the region. Archaeologically, we were able to register disperse or concentrated architecture, with constructive attributes and associated portable elements, that allow us to relate them to colonial occupations, alongside evidence of gold mining and processing, scattered in the landscape or concentrated in the settlement of Timón Cruz 2. Certain constructive characteristics and of the associated material allow us to consider them as part of an early colonial occupation, different from other post-hispanic contact settlements of the Puna region, which were occupied intensely since the 18th century.

The aim of this work was to characterize the spatial distribution of health-related quality of life in children from two departments with different welfare index in Tucumán (Argentina). Specifically, it was determined the prevalence of children with low appreciations of their health-related quality of life and their territorial manifestations, detailing urban-rural differences. An ecologi-cal, exploratory-descriptive, transverse study was carried out on 1647 schoolchildren. The KIDSCREEN-52 international questionnaire was applied, it explores ten dimensions of health-related quality of life, and also, spatial indexes were developed. The thematic maps allowed to detect particularities in the studied contexts. About half of the children evaluated felt harassed and /or rejected by their peers, while feelings of sadness compromised one in three participants. The results of this work identified and delimited priority ac-tion areas, detecting specific child problems that require special attention. Finally, the resulting cartography constitutes an input that can be used in the territorial planning of health care, improving the quality of life and reducing inequalities

El caso de la ciudad de La Plata, Argentina (1959-1962); Political Radicalization and State Repression: Working and University Youth During the Cuban Revolution and the CONINTES Plan. La “juventud” como concepto y lo “local” como escala de análisis son además, las claves metodológicas de este trabajo.; This article aims to reconstruct a part of the political history of Argentinian youth, particularly in the city of La Plata in the 1960s. This will be done through a dual approach: first, by analyzing the impact of the Cuban Revolution and the radicalization of the leftist and Peronist organizations; second, by discussing the proliferation of anti-communism and the extent and transformation of the government’s forms of repression, which had a direct effect on the organizations’ practices. Our aim is to analyze the political transformations that were typical of the sixties, focusing in particular on the city’s young activists, the workers, who were identified politically with Peronism, students advocating for University Reformism, and diverse leftist organizations. In our methodology, we use youth as a key concept and focus on the local as the scope of our analysis.

Inhibition of breast tumor growth by N(G)-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (l-NAME) is accompanied by activation of fibroblasts

Inhibition of breast tumor growth by N(G)-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (l-NAME) is accompanied by activation of fibroblasts Sciacca, Marianela; Belgorosky, Denise; Zambrano, Macarena; Gómez Escalante, José Ignacio; Bravo Roca, María Fernanda; Langle, Yanina Verónica; Sandes, Eduardo Omar; Eiján, Ana María; Lodillinsky, Catalina Nitric Oxide (NO) is involved in many physiological and pathological processes. It is generated by a family of NO synthases (NOS), being the inducible isoform, iNOS, responsible for higher amounts of NO. Here, we report that pharmacological inhibition of NO production by L-NAME reduces both viability and MAPK activated signalling pathways in iNOS positive human and murine cancer cell lines. In vivo, using syngeneic models, in parallel with tumor reduction induced by L-NAME, collagen deposition and α-SMA positive stromal cells are observed. This observation takes place only when tumor cells express iNOS. In vitro, L-NAME induces viability and differentiation on fibroblast. Our results reveal that NO inhibition contributes to stimulate proliferation and activation of fibroblasts in parallel with tumor reduction of iNOS positive breast cancer.

This article presents some considerations on the challenges that university education assumes in the context of confinement as part of the first results of the research project "Access to rights: education, art and culture in prison" of which we are part. Here we make reference to the course of the right to higher education in Argentina from the 21st century to the present to locate in a historical context the implementation of the work proposal that installs and sustains the National University of the Center of the Province of Buenos Aires (Argentina) in the prisons located in Azul and Sierra Chica. From this framework, we focalized on some of the challenges and emerging scopes of the concretion of the project in progress, assuming the need to reflect on the senses that higher education builds behind the walls as a reading key, and specifically, around the challenge of building a tutorial space as a meeting and educational environment.

Why do adults go to adult secondary school?

Why do adults go to adult secondary school? Donvito, Angel Eduardo; Otero, Maria Rita This paper analyzes the motivation of adult students to attend Adult Secondary Education (ASE) in Argentina. The investigation consisted of an exploration stage using the Focus Groups technique (FG) in which 29 ASE students participated, then a stage of analysis and construction of a survey based on the results of the FG, and finally, a stage of implementation and analysis of the survey, which was administered to 820 adult students nationwide. The results show that students' motivation is related to three aspects: improving job position, improving self-esteem and preparing to study a career. Furthermore, these aspects are not isolated, but are significantly associated with each other. Considering the students' motivation to attend the ASE both in the curricular conformation and at classrooms, could be a way to improve not only the teaching but also the quality of life of adults.
