Formation and evolution profiles of anthocyanin derivatives and tannins during fermentations and aging of red wines

Formation and evolution profiles of anthocyanin derivatives and tannins during fermentations and aging of red wines Berrueta, Luis A.; Rasines Perea, Zuriñe; Prieto Perea, Noelia; Asensio Regalado, Carlos; Alonso Salces, Rosa Maria; Sánchez Ilárduya, María B.; Gallo, Blanca The target of this paper is the study of anthocyanin and tannin extraction from red grape during maceration, the formation of new pigments, and the evolution profiles of anthocyanin derivatives and tannins during the alcoholic and malolactic fermentations and aging in oak barrels and steel vats. 2 anthocyanins, 38 anthocyanin derivatives and 37 tannins were monitored. Formation of all classes of anthocyanin derivatives starts quickly after anthocyanin extraction from grape. Their maximum levels are reached a few days after apex of anthocyanins during maceration/alcoholic fermentation. Indirect condensation derivatives showed less stable behavior than that of the direct flavanol–anthocyanin products during fermentations and aging. Within pyranoanthocyanins, vitisin B had more instability than vitisin A. Extraction of tannins from grape occurs slower than that of anthocyanins. Major tannins are procyanidin homodimers with B bond (45% of total tannins after fermentations), followed by monomers (around 25%) and mixed B dimers (more than 10%). Tannins suffer a general continuous decrease during aging, with increasing relevance of more oxygenated tannins as aging advances. Fermentations are crucial stages in the formation of anthocyanin derivatives. In contrast, aging causes a continuous degradation for nearly all classes of anthocyanin derivatives and tannins, with a more stable behavior for some of them. Thus, establishing with confidence which enological conditions favor each type of derivative during fermentation is an important goal for future research. This work studies many individual compounds, involves exhaustive sampling and covers the different winemaking stages at an industrial winemaking scale, contributing to a more complete vision.

Dissipative majorana quantum wires

Dissipative majorana quantum wires Huang, Yizhen; Lobos, Alejandro Martin; Cai, Zi In this paper, we formulate and quantitatively examine the effect of dissipation on topological systems. We use a specific model of Kitaev quantum wire with an onsite Ohmic dissipation and perform a numerically exact method to investigate the effect of dissipation on the topological features of the system (e.g., the Majorana edge mode) at zero temperature. We find that even though the topological phase is robust against weak dissipation as it is supposed to be, it will eventually be destroyed by sufficiently strong dissipation via either a continuous quantum phase transition or a crossover depending on the symmetry of the system. The dissipation-driven quantum criticality has also been discussed.

Physicochemical and antioxidant properties of a gastroprotective exopolysaccharide produced by Streptococcus thermophilus CRL1190

Physicochemical and antioxidant properties of a gastroprotective exopolysaccharide produced by Streptococcus thermophilus CRL1190 Lobo, Rene Emanuel; Gómez, María Inés; Font, Graciela Maria; Torino, Maria Ines The exopolysaccharide EPS1190 was isolated with high purity from skim milk fermented by the strain Streptococcus thermophilus CRL1190, the major EPS amount being recovered at stationary growth-phase (70.7 mg/L after 16 h). This polymer revealed moderate antioxidant activity in vitro and useful technological properties such as good emulsifying and flocculating capacity at low concentrations, high aqueous solubility (9.1 mg/mL), water and oil holding capacity (528.5 % and 1266 %, respectively) as well as thermal behavior. Thermogravimetric, Differential Thermal Analysis and Differential Scanning Calorimetry curves showed that the biopolymer was thermally stable up to 216 °C with a crystalline deformation in an endothermic process (△H = 284.46 J) at a melting temperature of 74.08°C. Furthermore, a degradation temperature (Td) of 295.4 °C was observed. These results postulate that EPS1190 could be used in the food industry due to its special micro-structure (scanning electron microscopy of EPS1190 demonstrated a homogeneous matrix with micro-porous and rough structure), its good performance and functionality in both aqueous and oil systems, which would remain at high temperatures.

Purity and constraints in legal theory. Some remarks on Paulson’s Analysis of the neo-Kantian dimension of Kelsenian theory of law

Purity and constraints in legal theory. Some remarks on Paulson’s Analysis of the neo-Kantian dimension of Kelsenian theory of law Navarro, Pablo Eugenio Hans Kelsen rejects both natural law theories and fact-based positivism. Rather, following certain ideas inspired by the neo-Kantian philosophy, he attempts to preserve a clear separation between law and facts as well as between law and morality. As it is well-known, Kelsen?s Neo-Kantian ideas are combined with other theses extracted from a positivistic vision of the law. However, as Stanley L. Paulson shows in his very fine paper about the limits of the kelsenian doctrine, Neo-Kantism and positivism cannot be easily articulated in a coherent picture. In particular, Paulson analyses two closely connected problems. On the one hand, the relation between legal interpretation and the ?irregular? creation of norms (i.e., the problem of constraints) and, on the other hand, the limits of purity (i.e., the philosophical problem). In this paper, I will briefly comment on both problems mentioned by Paulson. First, I deal with the philosophical problem and I focus on (i) the distinction between ?Is? and ?Ought? and (ii) the rejection of Natural Law Theories. Second, I analyse the problem of constraints and I pay attention to certain consequences that stem from the validity of irregular norms.

CYP26B1 declines postnatally in Sertoli cells independently of androgen action in the mouse testis

CYP26B1 declines postnatally in Sertoli cells independently of androgen action in the mouse testis Edelsztein, Nadia Yasmín; Kashimada, Kenichi; Schteingart, Helena Fedora; Rey, Rodolfo Alberto Meiosis begins at puberty and relies on several factors, including androgens and retinoic acid in the mouse testis. CYP26B1 degrades retinoic acid in the testis during prenatal development preventing meiosis initiation. Given the concurrence of meiotic entry and completion of Sertoli cell maturation in response to androgens at puberty in the mouse, we proposed that CYP26B1 is downregulated by androgens in the Sertoli cell during this period. By immunohistochemistry, we showed that CYP26B1 declines in Sertoli cells after birth. However, luciferase reporter assays and quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction performed in the prepubertal mouse Sertoli cell line SMAT1 revealed no changes in Cyp26b1 expression in response to androgen treatment. Furthermore, studies carried out using primary Sertoli cells of 10-day-old mice showed no changes in either Cyp26b1 or CYP26B1 expression in response to androgen treatment. In summary, the hereby reported decline in CYP26B1 expression in Sertoli cells towards pubertal onset does not appear to be caused by a direct inhibitory effect of androgens on Sertoli cells in the mouse.

Paleomagnetic confirmation of the “unorthodox” configuration of Atlantica between 2.1 and 2.0 Ga

Paleomagnetic confirmation of the “unorthodox” configuration of Atlantica between 2.1 and 2.0 Ga Franceschinis, Pablo Reinaldo; Rapalini, Augusto Ernesto; Sánchez Bettucci, Leda; Martínez Dopico, Carmen Irene; Milanese, Florencia Nidia The paleogeographic evolution of the Río de la Plata Craton during the Precambrian poses important questions regarding its participation in the Atlantica continent and Columbia supercontinent. With the aim of contributing to the paleogeographic evolution of the craton in mid-Paleoproterozoic times, systematic paleomagnetic studies were carried out in late- to post-tectonic plutons of the Piedra Alta terrane (Uruguay). These yielded six new paleomagnetic poles with ages between 2.1 and 2.0 Ga that can be interpreted as integrating a single apparent polar wander path together with three previous poles from the same terrane and similar ages. The positions of the poles along the proposed path are compatible with the known ages of the intrusives from which they were computed and show a smooth distribution of magnetic polarities. Comparison of this path with those coeval from other South American and African cratons confirms previous interpretations that if the Atlantica continent ever existed, had a significantly different configuration than the originally proposed. Based on the new apparent polar wander path proposed for this different continental configuration a model of its paleogeographic evolution that suggests fast displacements in (probably southern) polar latitudes during the study time lapse is presented.

An empirical analysis of competitive nonlinear pricing

An empirical analysis of competitive nonlinear pricing Aryal, Gaurab; Gabrielli, Maria Florencia We estimate a model of competitive nonlinear pricing with multidimensional preference heterogeneity using individual level data on advertisements bought by local businesses (e.g., doctors, electricians) from two Yellow Page Directories in one U.S. city-market. Variation in individual choices and payments allows us to identify the joint density of preferences, marginal costs of publishing and common utility parameters. Our estimates suggest substantial welfare loss due to asymmetric information. Comparing duopoly outcomes with (counterfactual) monopoly outcomes, we find that with less competition (i) producer surplus increases substantially; (ii) more “low-type” consumers are excluded; (iii) product variety increases, but benefits accrue only to the “high-type” consumers; (iv) total consumer surplus decreases; (v) but its distribution, across consumers, does not change.

Sensitivity of the frog model to initial conditions

Sensitivity of the frog model to initial conditions Johnson, Tobias; Trivellato Rolla, Leonardo The frog model is an interacting particle system on a graph. Active particles perform independent simple random walks, while sleeping particles remain inert until visited by an active particle. Some number of sleeping particles are placed at each site sampled independently from a certain distribution, and then one particle is activated to begin the process. We show that the recurrence or transience of the model is sensitive not just to the expectation but to the entire distribution. This is in contrast to closely related models like branching random walk and activated random walk.

Development and validation of the Spanish Work-Family Conflict Scale (SP-WFCS): Evidence from two independent samples in Argentina

Development and validation of the Spanish Work-Family Conflict Scale (SP-WFCS): Evidence from two independent samples in Argentina Pujol Cols, Lucas Joan Research on work-family conflict has increased dramatically in recent years. In this study, we developed a Spanish version of the Work-Family Conflict Scale (Carlson et al. Journal of Vocational Behavior, 56(2), 249–276, 2000) and examined its reliability, dimensionality, factor invariance, gender invariance, convergent validity, discriminant validity, and empirical validity. To this end, we analyzed data collected from two independent samples of Argentinian employees (N = 618). The results from the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) revealed that the Spanish Work-Family Conflict Scale (SP-WFCS) displayed a sixdimensional factor structure (CFI ≥ .96, TLI = .96, RMSEA = .06). Furthermore, each dimension showed satisfactory levels of internal consistency (α estimates ranged from .80 to .92), convergent validity (AVE estimates ranged from .59 to .80, and CR estimates ranged from .81 to .92) and discriminant validity (AVE values ≥ shared variance estimates). Moreover, the results from the multi-group confirmatory factor analyses indicated that the six-dimensional model of the SP-WFCS was statistically invariant across samples and gender. Finally, most work-family conflict dimensions displayed significant correlations with three antecedents (i.e., quantitative demands, emotional demands, and core self-evaluations) and two outcomes (i.e., affective job satisfaction and burnout). Taken together, the results provided support to the validity of the SP-WFCS in Argentina, suggesting that it may be a reliable and valid instrument to measure work-family conflict in Spanish-speaking countries. Limitations to the study and opportunities for future research are discussed in this article.

Interaction between prospective risk factors in the prediction of suicide risk

Interaction between prospective risk factors in the prediction of suicide risk Grendas, Leandro; Rojas, Sasha M.; Puppo, Soledad; Vidjen, Patricia; Portela, Alicia Andrea; Chiapella, Luciana Carla; Rodante, Demián; Daray, Federico Manuel Background: To meet the goal of preventing suicide the most important thing is to know the risk factors of suicidal behavior and understand their interaction. Aims: The current study aims to evaluate prospective predictors and the interaction between factors for suicide and suicide re-attempts in high-risk, suicidal patients during a 24 month prospective follow-up period. Methods: A multicenter prospective cohort study was designed to compare data obtained from 324 patients admitted to the emergency department for current suicidal ideation or a recent suicide attempt. Participants were clinically evaluated at baseline and follow-up every 6 months to assess any unfavorable events (suicide or a suicide attempt). To estimate the rate of unfavorable events, the Kaplan–Meier method was used and Cox Proportional Hazards Regression Model was employed to examine predictors of suicide and suicide reattempt. Results: The incidence of a new suicide attempt was 26,000 events/100,000 persons-years. The incidence of death by suicide was 1110 events/100,000 person-year. The most reliable predictors of unfavorable events were being women, previous suicide attempts, younger age, and childhood sexual abuse. Findings revealed an interaction between childhood sexual abuse and low psychosocial functioning that increased the risk of an unfavorable event. Conclusion: The risk of suicide re-attempts and suicide in the current 2-year follow-up was high. There was an interaction between low psychosocial functioning and childhood sexual abuse. This evidence should be taken into account for the evaluation and planning of preventive strategies.

This experience was aimed at promoting body awareness, tone modulation and postural adequacy and achieving a general attitude change in the socio-labor context. This was concretized after two Psychomotor workshops were carried out using relaxation as a technical resource for disciplinary intervention. For the purpose of sharing the experience, we organize this writing as follows: first, we refer to the theoretical framework that supported experience. Second, we describe the workshops developed and analyze the results by commenting on the evaluations that the participants expressed through written individual questionnaires. Finally, we refer to the final considerations, which consider this new scenario a thought based on the impact of the proposals made to adults in this context and the new challenges that organizations pose to the psychomotorist.

Effect of photoperiod on ovarian maturation in Cheirodon interruptus (Teleostei: Characidae)

Effect of photoperiod on ovarian maturation in Cheirodon interruptus (Teleostei: Characidae); Efeito do fotoperíodo na maturação dos ovários em Cheirodon interruptus (Teleostei: Characidae) Garcia, Ignacio Daniel; Plaul, Silvia Elena; Torres, D.; del Fresno, Pamela Sabrina; Miranda, Leandro Andres; Colautti, Dario César Cheirodon interruptus is a ubiquitous small characid that inhabits the Pampean region and commonly used as bait. Its vast market is supplied from the wild population causing a significant environmental impact. In this study, we assessthe effect of photoperiod on ovarian maturation in order to evaluate its potential as a tool to manipulate reproduction under artificial conditions. Four treatments in triplicate (light: dark, L: D) were tested: 24L: 0D, 12L: 12D, 0L: 24D and a progressive photoperiod corresponding to the daily photoperiod increments in wild during winter-spring transition, accelerated three times. The experiment was conducted for 45 days. Gonadosomatic index (GSI), oocyte mean diameter, vitellogenic oocyte proportions, plasma estradiol concentrations (E2), condition factor (Kn) and standard length were estimated. Values of mean GSI, oocyte diameter, vitellogenic oocyte proportions and E2 concentration were maximum in the progressive treatment indicating vitellogenesis stimulation. In turn the same parameters were minimum in the 24L: 0D, revealing the vitellogenesis inhibition. This study showed that photoperiodic regime play an important role in the onset of ovarian maturation in C. interruptus.; Cheirodon interruptus é um pequeno caracídeo amplamente distribuído na região Pampeana e comumente usado como isca.

New algorithms for weighted k-domination and total k-domination problems in proper interval graphs

New algorithms for weighted k-domination and total k-domination problems in proper interval graphs Chiarelli, Nina; Hartinger, Tatiana Romina; Leoni, Valeria Alejandra; Lopez Pujato, María Inés; Milanič, Martin Given a positive integer k, a k-dominating set in a graph G is a set of vertices such that every vertex not in the set has at least k neighbors in the set. A total k-dominating set is a set of vertices such that every vertex of the graph has at least k neighbors in the set. The problems of finding the minimum size of a k-dominating, respectively total k-dominating set, in a given graph, are referred to as k-domination, respectively total k-domination. These generalizations of the classical domination and total domination problems are known to be NP-hard in the class of chordal graphs, and, more specifically, even in the classes of split graphs (both problems) and undirected path graphs (in the case of total k-domination). On the other hand, it follows from previous works by Bui-Xuan et al. (2013) [8] and by Belmonte and Vatshelle (2013) [3] that these two families of problems are solvable in time O(|V(G)|3k+4) in the class of interval graphs. We develop faster algorithms for k-domination and total k-domination in the class of proper interval graphs, by means of reduction to a single shortest path computation in a derived directed acyclic graph with O(|V(G)|2k) nodes and O(|V(G)|4k) arcs. We show that a suitable implementation, which avoids constructing all arcs of the digraph, leads to a running time of O(|V(G)|3k). The algorithms are also applicable to the weighted case.
