Sarli, Dinorah Anabella; Teixeira Gomes, Gisele; Reznikov, Sebastian; Acosta, Federico Francisco; Fariña, Julia Ines; Delgado, Osvaldo Daniel; Sanchez, Leandro Arturo
Aim: The aim was to characterize cold-adapted bacteria by testing their PGP features and antagonistic activity against Macrophomina phaseolina, both in vitro and coating soybean seeds (Glycine max [L.] Merr.). Methods and results: Burkholderia gladioli MB39, Serratia proteamaculans 136 and Serratia proteamaculans 137 were evaluated. In vitro tests showed that S. proteamaculans 136 and 137 produce siderophore and indole-acetic acid (IAA), solubilize phosphate and fix nitrogen. Additionally, B. gladioli MB39 and S. proteamaculans 137 showed hydrolase activity and potent antifungal effects. The biocontrol efficacy over soybean seeds was evaluated using in vitro and greenhouse methods by immersing seeds into each bacterial suspension. As a result, S. proteamaculans 136 has improved the performance in all the seed germination evaluated parameters. In addition, S. proteamaculans 137 and B. gladioli MB39 strongly inhibited M. phaseolina, reducing the infection index values to 10% and 0%, respectively. Conclusion: Serratia proteamaculans 136, 137 and Burkholderia gladioli MB39 showed plant growth promotion features and inhibition of Macrophomina phaseolina infection by producing different antifungal compounds. Significance and impact of the study: Our results reinforce the application of cold-adapted Serratia proteamaculans and Burkholderia gladioli bacterial strains as candidates for developing microbial formulation to promote plant growth and guarantee antifungal protection in soybean crops.
A glimpse into the DNA virome of the unique “living fossil” Welwitschia mirabilis
Debat, Humberto Julio; Bejerman, Nicolas
Here, we report the identification and characterization of four novel DNA viruses from Welwitschia mirabilis transcriptomic and genomic datasets. Complete circular virus-like sequences with affinity to members of the Caulimoviridae and Geminiviridae families were detected and characterized from Welwitschia mirabilis genomic data. The two newly members of the Caulimoviridae family have been tentatively named as Welwitschia mirabilis virus 1 and 2 (WMV1-WMV2); whereas the two identified geminiviruses were named as Welwitschia mirabilis associated geminivirus A and B (WMaGVA-WMaGVB). Phylogenetic analysis suggests that WMV1-2 belong to a proposed genus of Caulimoviridae-infecting gymnosperms. WMaGVA-B are phylogenetically related with both mastreviruses and capulaviruses and likely represent a distinct evolutionary lineage within geminiviruses. Additionally, we detected several endogenous virus-like elements (EVE) linked to the discovered viruses in the recently reported W. mirabilis genome, suggesting a shared ancient evolutionary history of these viruses and the Welwithschia.
Multitarget Activities of Müller Glial Cells and Low-Density Lipoprotein Receptor-Related Protein 1 in Proliferative Retinopathies
Sanchez, Maria Cecilia; Chiabrando, Gustavo Alberto
Müller glial cells (MGCs), the main glial component of the retina, play an active role in retinal homeostasis during development and pathological processes. They strongly monitor retinal environment and, in response to retinal imbalance, activate neuroprotective mechanisms mainly characterized by the increase of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). Under these circumstances, if homeostasis is not reestablished, the retina can be severely injured and GFAP contributes to neuronal degeneration, as they occur in several proliferative retinopathies such as diabetic retinopathy, sickle cell retinopathy and retinopathy of prematurity. In addition, MGCs have an active participation in inflammatory responses releasing proinflammatory mediators and metalloproteinases to the extracellular space and vitreous cavity. MGCs are also involved in the retinal neovascularization and matrix extracellular remodeling during the proliferative stage of retinopathies. Interestingly, low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1 (LRP1) and its ligand α2-macroglobulin (α2M) are highly expressed in MGCs and they have been established to participate in multiple cellular and molecular activities with relevance in retinopathies. However, the exact mechanism of regulation of retinal LRP1 in MGCs is still unclear. Thus, the active participation of MGCs and LRP1 in these diseases, strongly supports the potential interest of them for the design of novel therapeutic approaches. In this review, we discuss the role of LRP1 in the multiple MGCs activities involved in the development and progression of proliferative retinopathies, identifying opportunities in the field that beg further research in this topic area. Summary Statement MGCs and LRP1 are active players in injured retinas, participating in key features such as gliosis and neurotoxicity, neovascularization, inflammation, and glucose control homeostasis during the progression of ischemic diseases, such as proliferative retinopathies.
Britos Castro, Ana Victoria; Pedrazzani, Carla Eleonora; Collo, Gilda; Bustos Mantovani, Melina; Barrojo, Sofía
Here we present the routes that we are building as teachers, students, women from the optional seminars entitled Critical Physical Geography and Natures of the Anthropocene; Counter-cartographies of neoliberalism. Social struggles and movements in defense of territories and life; and, Politics of the landscape and (in)justices: production and shadows -colonial, racial, patriarchal- of the landscape, from the Department of Geography, Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities (FFyH), National University of Córdoba (UNC), together with members of the Assemblies of the Paravachasca and Punilla Valleys, in the Córdoba province (Argentina). The starting point was not the extension, but the struggle itself from the Assemblies questioning us in our daily practices in and from the university. In these pages, we share the walking in the territories from the classrooms of the FFyH to the organization of a route with students to be present at the Acampe por el monte (Camp for the forest), organized by the Paravachasca Assembly. Knowing what is happening, listening to the voices of those who are in the territory putting their bodies and their lives to resist and re-exist, gave rise to the movement of finding ourselves, of allowing ourselves to be affected by what we have lived in the Camp and (re)think in common the ways to create a framework committed to environmental defense from and in the territories. From the participation in the Acampe por el Monte became “In defense of the territories and the forest: interseminar integrative tour-workshop and joint actions with defenders of the environment in Punilla and Paravachasca” as an extension activity co-organized with the Socio-environmental Assembly San Roque Despierta, self-convened neighbors of the Punilla Valley and in dialogue with the Paravachasca Assembly and self-convened neighbors of Paravachasca. From these experiences, we weave what we understand by extension and we are open to the possibility of rethinking the university and the ways of building knowledge.
Modeling excited-state molecular dynamics beyond the Born–Oppenheimer regime
Nelson, Tammie R.; Fernández Alberti, Sebastián; Tretiak, Sergei
Nonadiabatic molecular dynamics is the method of choice for modeling a wide range of excited-state phenomena. Although much progress has been made in improving the usability and efficiency of ground-state calculations, there are still challenges in translating this advance to the excited state.
Filosofía feminista y giro afectivo: Una respuesta ex ante; Feminist Philosophy and the Affective Turn: An ex ante Response
Macon, Cecilia Marta
The affective turn developed as a matrix of conceptual discussion during the passage between the 20th and 21st centuries and, among many other debates, argued in favor of the productivity of the distinction between affect and emotion. The objective of this article is to point out the type of intervention that feminist philosophy deployed on this issue before the irruption of this tradition and, secondly, to establish what content can be given to the idea of affective agency under this framework. The core of the argument leads us to go through a series of fundamental interventions by the feminist philosopher Iris Marion Young who, according to my assessment, scrutinized some of the problematic political effects of certain arguments that, to this day, form the heart of the affective turn in its most orthodox version.
Characterization of lactic acid bacteria isolated from the poultry intestinal environment with anti-Salmonella activity in vitro
Hidalgo, Victor Maximiliano; Babot, Jaime Daniel; Fernández, María Magdalena; Perez Chaia, Adriana Beatriz; Audisio, Marcela Carina; Apella, Maria Cristina
The purpose of this research was the genotypic identification of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), isolated from the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of healthy adult birds, and the study of their safety regarding antibiotic resistance, physiological and functional properties involved in the colonization of the GIT of poultry, and Salmonella exclusion, as members of a potential mixed probiotic supplement for poultry. The nucleotidic sequence from Lactobacillus crispatus P1, L. animalis L3, and Enterococcus faecium CRL 1385 (ex-J96) showed 100, 99.8, and 99.3% identity with L. crispatus DSM 20584 T, Ligilactobacillus salivarius ATCC 11741 T, and E. faecium ATCC 19434 T, respectively. These strains showed no resistance to relevant antibiotics usually administered to animals proposed by the European Food Safety Authority. They could endure the detrimental conditions of the gastrointestinal tract (pH 2.6 and oxgall 0.1 and 0.4% w/v). In an ex vivo assay, the LAB showed high adherence to the three sections of the GIT, reaching values higher than 70%. The adhesion to mucus was strain-dependent: L. crispatus CRL 1453 evidenced the highest adhesion (> 19%) while Lig. salivarius subsp. salivarius CRL 1417 and E. faecium CRL 1385 adhered to a lower extent (> 9 and 2%, respectively). Moreover, the LAB elicited remarkable anti-Salmonella activity, taking into account that they could inhibit elevated counts of different Salmonella serovars, especially the host-specific serovars S. Gallinarum and S. Pullorum (up to 8 log CFU/mL decrease in Salmonella counts).

Recent jaguar records confirm the conservation value of the Baritú-Tariquía corridor between Argentina and Bolivia
Caruso, María Flavia; Perovic, Pablo Gastón; de Angelo, Carlos Daniel; Sillero-Zubiri, Claudio
Effective transboundary corridors play a crucial role in jaguar Panthera onca conservation. Local residents reported jaguar sightings along the Baritú–Tariquía Biological Corridor, which prompted us to carry out this camera-trap survey. We surveyed an area of 1,243 km2 across the corridor to confirm jaguar presence. We used 50 single camera stations, with cameras placed c. 5 km apart. We placed the cameras along trails, streams and mountain ridges. We recorded jaguars at seven sites across the Corridor; at least three different individuals were identified. These records confirm the presence of the jaguar in the Baritú–Tariquía Biological Corridor between Argentina and Bolivia, a trans-frontier area of the Austral Yungas facing multiple threats but hosting one of the southernmost jaguar populations. Conservation efforts in border regions can promote collaboration and synergies between agencies and other conservation stakeholders, with important implications for wide-ranging predators such as jaguars and their habitats.
Anglers’ perception and attitudes towards angling related marine litter and a conservation program in Argentina
García, Germán Oscar; Cabral, Victoria Noelia; Zumpano, Francisco; Gorostegui Valenti, Ariadna
This study was designed to analyzes the perceptions and attitudes of recreational anglers towards the fishing litter issue and a conservation program seeking to promote the responsible management of waste derived from recreational fisheries at a coastal marine Reserve in Argentina. A total of 248 recreational anglers were surveyed between December 2019 and March 2020 at the Mar Chiquita Reserve. The survey included: (1) social and demographic characteristics of the anglers' profile; (2) anglers' perceptions about the Mar Chiquita Reserve and marine litter; and (3) anglers' perception on the conservation program. The average respondent included a coastal angler, who identifies with the male gender, is about 49 years old, and mainly lives in cities that are close to the fishing site. Most of the anglers think that the litter generated during their practice could lead to some threat to the ecosystem. More than 85% of the anglers responded that they returned home with the litter generated during a fishing day while 68% of them also said that they disposed of the litter in some type of bin located within the protected area. The conservation program is recognized by most of the anglers; however, not all of them use the bins installed in the territory by this program. From the different attributes in the conservation program that were assessed by the anglers, it can be observed that the frequency with which the bins are emptied not satisfy the users’ needs and affected the use of the bins. The results presented here are input to consider recreational anglers as key actors not only for the conservation program being studied, but also to design participative management opportunities in the coastal environment.
Huella hídrica como indicador del consumo de agua en la minería de litio en la Puna argentina; Water footprint as indicator of water consumption in lithium mining in the argentine Puna
Arias Alvarado, Paula V.; Diaz Paz, Walter Fernando; Salas Barboza, Ariela Griselda Judith; Seghezzo, Lucas; Iribarnegaray, Martín Alejandro
In view of the projected growth in lithium production, some concerns have been raised as the consumption of fresh water and brine associated with this mining activity is generally unknown. The objective of this article was to estimate the water consumption associated with lithium mining in the Argentine Puna using the Water Footprint Index. The methodological approach was based on the selection of the Olaroz project as a study case and the subsequent analysis, review and processing of information from its environmental and social impact study. The volume of water consumed by the mining project is represented in its entirety by the blue water footprint, estimated at 584.1 m3 /tnLi2CO3 produced. 92% of the total value of the indicator is associated with brine consumption, while the remaining 8% is due to fresh water consumption. The water footprint could serve as an indicator contributing, from a technical point of view, to the analysis and discussion of water consumption in the extraction and processing of lithium and its possible impact on the local hydrological cycle.
Computational design of a Massive Solar-Thermal Collector enhanced with Phase Change Materials
Peralta, Ignacio; Fachinotti, Victor Daniel; Koenders, Eduardus A.B.; Caggiano, Antonio
A cement-based device that can meet, partially or completely, the heating loads of a building by absorbing the solar radiation and converting it into thermal energy can be defined as a Massive Solar-Thermal Collector. The absorbing material for the incoming radiation is made of a cementitious composite, generally concrete, and flowing water inside tubes acts as a heat transfer medium. For an optimized performance, during periods of solar radiation, the device has to efficiently conduct the heat flow from the absorbing surface of the collector and transfer this heat energy to the water. Then, when the radiation is reduced or became null, the device should retain as much as possible the heat energy, reducing the heat that is escaping the collector and consequently the losses to the surrounding environment. In this work, by performing a parametric analysis, different absorbing materials are tested with the objective of finding the best configuration that maximizes the energy efficiency of the collector. Cementitious materials, in combination with Phase Change Materials with distinct melting (and solidification) temperatures, are selected as candidate absorbing materials. The weather variables of an entire year and for two different locations are considered to evaluate the behavior of these devices in opposite climates. After numerical simulations, in where an enthalpy-based finite element formulation is used to solve the physical problem, the obtained results allow to conclude that the inclusion of Phase Change Materials within the absorber material of the collectors, if it is done in a correct way, can improve the energy performance of these devices. In this study, 34 °C and 53 °C are chosen as the most appropriated melting temperatures, which conduct to considerable improvements in the achieved performances, and in both warm and cold climates.
Nest-sharing behavior of captive Broad-snouted caimans (Caiman latirostris): Cooperation or exploitation?
Pierini, Sofía Evelyn; Imhof, Alba; Larriera, Alejandro; Piña, Carlos Ignacio; Simoncini, Melina Soledad
Communal egg-laying is not frequently observed in crocodilians that exhibit nest attendance. However, it has been reported for both wild and captive Caiman latirostris. To understand the proximate causes of communal nesting, we aim to describe the nesting behavior of caimans during communal egg-laying in a captive population. Video cameras were placed at nests and the behavior of females was monitored throughout three incubation periods. We documented and analyzed social behavioral data. Nest-sharing behavior consisted of several females congregating and performing nest construction, nest vigilance and nest maintenance. It was observed in all nests previous to egg-laying. After the first laying, one female prevented others from approaching. The second egg-laying female negatively affected the previous clutch. Working together at the same nest would appear to be an exploitative rather than a cooperative activity, and communal nesting could be a competitive interaction, due to limited suitable nesting sites or overcrowding due to captivity.

Looking under stones: A new Ctenomys species from the rocky foothills of the Sierras Grandes of central Argentina
Mapelli, Fernando Javier; Teta, Pablo Vicente; Contreras, Facundo; Pereyra Villaurreta, Maria Daniela Renée; Priotto, Jose Waldemar; Coda, José Antonio
Ctenomys (tuco-tucos) is one of the most speciose genera of mammals, and the number of species that compose it continues to increase. Of the 65 species currently recognized for the genus, 15% have been described in the last 10 years. In this work, based on morphological and molecular evidence, we describe a new species of tuco-tuco for Central Argentina. This new species inhabits stony soils in the foothills of Sierras Grandes in Córdoba province and is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of anatomical characters, including a unique morphology of the posterolateral extension of the palatine. The molecular phylogeny based on the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene showed that this new species does not belong to any species complex described for Ctenomys. On the contrary, this new taxon shows a high genetic divergence with the rest of the species and species groups of Ctenomys and was recovered as an independent lineage within the phylogeny of the genus. This finding increases the richness of Ctenomys to 66 species. Our results highlight the need to increase the geographic sampling of studies in this genus to achieve a more complete understanding of its diversity.
"A la vuelta de mi casa había un transa”: de la implicación de adolescentes varones con el narcotráfico hacia el mapeo del crimen organizado en el Gran Buenos Aires, Argentina; "Around the corner, there was a drug dealer": from the involvement of male adolescents in drug trafficking towards a methodological proposal for the mapping of organized crime in Greater Buenos Aires, Argentina
Rocha, Heder Leandro
In this article, I present a methodological proposal for the mapping of drug trafficking in Greater Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is a non-definitive, bottom-up approximation. In other words, it rises from the 'lowest' rung of drug trafficking to gain knowledge about the higher structures. I use 13 indepth interviews with young people and adolescents residing in Greater Buenos Aires who in November 2017 were undergoing treatment for problematic drug use in a therapeutic community in Lomas de Zamora. e methodology used systematizes the stories of interaction with drug trafficking in a semantic network and a synthesis map, thus reconstructing some forms of spatialization, some power relations in its internal hierarchy, and some of its actors. Finally, the effort culminates in a methodology which can illuminate the spatial action of other organized crime activities such as arms trafficking and human trafficking.
Development of new 1, 3-dihydroxyacridone derivatives as Akt pathway inhibitors in skeletal muscle cells
Irazoqui, Ana Paula; Menéndez, Cintia Anabella; Steingruber, Sebastián; González, Agustina; Appignanesi, Gustavo Adrian; Buitrago, Claudia Graciela; Gerbino, Darío César
In the present work, four new compounds based on the privileged structure acridone were efficiently synthesized following simple operational techniques and biologically tested on proliferative skeletal muscle cells (C2C12) and rhabdomyosarcoma cells (RD) showing no significant changes in the number of dead or viable cells at 1 µM during 24 or 48 h of treatment. Of relevance, acridone derivatives 3a-3d at 0.5 µM for 24 h effectively inhibited Akt activation in C2C12, while at 1 µM only compounds 3a and 3b have effect. RD cells showed a different response pattern. These cells treated with 3a (0.5 µM), 3b (0.5 µM) or 3d (0.5 or 1 µM) for 24 h shown significant Akt inhibition. In addition, 3a-3d assayed at 1 µM for 48 h were highly successful in inhibiting Akt phosphorylation. Finally, based on molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations, we rationalize the experimental results mentioned above and propose that 3-phosphoinositide-dependent kinase-1 (PDK1) could be one of the molecular targets of this new series of 1, 3-dihydroxyacridone derivatives. Biological and in silico studies revealed that 3b could be considered as the most promising prototype for the development of new antitumor agents.
