Galvan, Walter Ruben; Arriaga, Guido José; Streitenberger, Nicolás; Landoni, Maria Fabiana; Fazzio, Luis Emilio
The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of metaphylactic treatment with single doses of florfenicol (20 and 40 mg/kg subcutaneously), against respiratory disease in feedlot calves. A total of 1297 male and female calves with an average weight of 110 kg were placed in five pens. They were randomly assigned to three groups: one group treated with florfenicol SC 20mg/kg (FLO20), a group treated with florfenicol SC 40 mg/kg (FLO40) and the control group (CTL) received no treatment. Individual weight was obtained in each group (n=30) on days 0, 21 and 50 of the trial. A complete randomize block (pen) design was used and the animal was considered the experimental unit. The percentage of ill animals was 10.83, 3.48 and 2.33 for the CTL, FLO20 and FLO40 groups, respectively. Moreover, a higher daily weight gain was observed in the FLO20 and FLO40 groups within the first 21 days of the trial (p<0,001). Metaphylactic treatment with FLO reduced morbidity due to respiratory disease and improved daily weight gain. No statistically significant differences were found between FLO20 and FLO40 groups regarding daily weight gain, respiratory bovine disease incidence, retreatment or mortality.
Most of anti-glycolipid IgG-antibodies associated to neurological disorders occur without their IgM counterpart
Lardone, Ricardo Dante; Irazoqui, Fernando Jose; Nores, Gustavo Alejandro
Different neurological disorders frequently display antibodies against several self-glycans. Increasing evidence supports their pathogenic role; however, far less is known about their origin. Meanwhile, antibodies recognizing non-self glycans appear in normal human serum during immune response to bacteria.
Molecular clumps towards compact H II regions
Saldaño, Hugo Pablo; Rubio, Mónica; Cappa, Cristina Elisabeth; Gomez, Mercedes Nieves
To better understand how the H II regions can affect their surrounding molecular clouds we have studied the molecular distribution towards three compact H II regions associated with IRAS sources (08140-3559, 09014-4736, and 09026-4842) by means of the observations of 12CO, 13CO, and C18O molecules in the J = 3-2 transition with the APEX telescope. In two cases, we show evidence of possible disruption of the molecular clouds and increasing turbulence towards the diffuse H α emissions, which could be due to the ionizing front. We find 11 clumps towards the IRAS sources either nearby or surrounding the H II regions. Their parameters, such as the optical depths, column densities, masses, and [13CO/C18O] abundances, were calculated assuming LTE conditions. We discuss the behaviour of such parameters and we have found that the [13CO/C18O] abundances in the IRAS sources associated with a diffuse H α emission are higher than the abundances in regions where no H α emission is detected, indicating that such a parameter could be affected by the UV field coming from H II region. We also discuss the rise of the average [H2/13CO] and [H2/C18O] abundances in the IRAS sources which show evidence of disruption of molecular clouds by the expansion of the H II regions. With these average abundances, we estimate the LTE total mass of each clump and compare them with the virial mass to discuss whether our clumps are gravitationally stable.
Prelinear Hilbert algebras
Castiglioni, José Luis; Celani, Sergio Arturo; San Martín, Hernán Javier
In this paper we give an explicit description of the left adjoint of the forgetful functor from the algebraic category of Gödel algebras (i.e., prelinear Heyting algebras) to the algebraic category of bounded prelinear Hilbert algebras. We apply this result in order to study possible descriptions of the coproduct of two finite algebras in the algebraic category of prelinear Hilbert algebras.
Adsorption of bentazone and imazapyc from water by using functionalized silica: Experimental and computational analysis
Spaltro, Agustín; Simonetti, Sandra Isabel; Laurella, Sergio Luis; Ruiz, Danila Luján; Díaz Compañy, Andres Carlos Daniel; Juan, Alfredo; Allegretti, Patricia
In this study, silica and functionalized silica materials (3-aminopropyl and 3-mercapto derivatives) were successfully used for the removal of the pesticides bentazone and imazapyc from aqueous solutions. Adsorbent materials were characterized by BET isotherms and FT-IR spectroscopy (confirming the functionalization), and their equilibrium adsorption capacity was evaluated at different ionic strengths. It is observed that the maximum adsorption capacities decrease in the order 3-aminopropyl-derivative > silica >3-mercaptopropyl derivative. An increase in ionic strength produces an enhancement in the removal of pesticides. All isotherms are Ib-type and follow the Langmuir model, suggesting a monolayer physical adsorption process.

The representantion the political adversary in the electoral campaing for the goverment of Mendoza (1917- 1918)
On January 20, 1918 there were elections for governor in the Province of Mendoza, in which conservadores and radicales clashed. The electoral campaign took place from the end of November of 1917, in a frame of political polarization aggravated by the federal intervention sent by the government of Hipólito Yrigoyen. The article analyzes the characterization of the adversary made through two local newspapers (“La Palabra” and “La Tarde”) by the two competitors and the relationship of these representations and the political symbols used around the elections with the new electoral framework given by the Sáenz Peña Law at national level, and the new electoral laws promoted by the reformist governments at the local level.
Lumen-intima and media-adventitia segmentation in IVUS images using supervised classifications of arterial layers and morphological structures
Lo Vercio, Lucas; del Fresno, Mirta Mariana; Larrabide, Ignacio
Background: Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) provides axial grey-scale images of blood vessels. The large number of images require automatic analysis, specifically to identify the lumen and outer vessel wall. However, the high amount of noise, the presence of artifacts and anatomical structures, such as bifurcations, calcifications and fibrotic plaques, usually hinder the proper automatic segmentation of the vessel wall. Methods: Lumen, media, adventitia and surrounding tissues are automatically detected using Support Vector Machines (SVMs). The classification performance of the SVMs vary according to the kind of structure present within each region of the image. Random Forest (RF) is used to detect different morphological structures and to modify the initial layer classification depending on the detected structure. The resulting classification maps are fed into a segmentation method based on deformable contours to detect lumen-intima (LI) and media-adventitia (MA) interfaces. Results: The modifications in the layer classifications according to the presence of structures proved to be effective improving LI and MA segmentations. The proposed method reaches a Jaccard Measure (JM) of 0.88 ± 0.08 for LI segmentation, compared with 0.88 ± 0.05 of a semiautomatic method. When looking at MA, our method reaches a JM of 0.84 ± 0.09, and outperforms previous automatic methods in terms of HD, with 0.51mm ± 0.30. Conclusions: A simple modification to the arterial layer classification produces results that match and improve state-of-the-art fully-automatic segmentation methods for LI and MA in 20MHz IVUS images. For LI segmentation, the proposed automatic method performs accurately as semi-automatic methods. For MA segmentation, our method matched the quality of state-of-the-art automatic methods described in the literature. Furthermore, our implementation is modular and open-source, allowing for future extensions and improvements.
Particulate matter combustion. Cordierite-supported potassium nitrate catalysts modified with transition metal oxides
Leguizamón Aparicio, María Silvia del Valle; Montaña, Maia; Ruiz, Maria Lucia; Mosconi, Sandra Mariela; Musci, Juan José; Ocsachoque, Marco Antonio; Casella, Mónica Laura; Lick, Ileana Daniela
In this work, cordierite-supported potassium nitrate catalysts modified with transition metal oxides are studied as catalysts for the particulate matter combustion from diesel engine emissions. The catalysts were prepared by nitrate solutions. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal programmed reduction (TPR), vibrational spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning microscopy provided with EDS analyzer. KNO3 containing catalysts present high activity in the presence of O2/NO. The Tmax obtained with these catalysts decreases more than 200ºC with respect to the temperature of the non-catalyzed process. The activity is associated with the presence of KNO3 and the role of this salt can be attributed to the NO3-/ NO2- redox cycle contribution and to the surface wetting effect.

The aim of the project was to mitigate the impact of debris in coastal zones. During its execution, a clash of interests between distinct local residents (i.e., neighbors, recreational fishermen and fishing operators) with distinct positions in regard to the development of the reserve were evidenced. Given that it is a reserve of multiple uses, in many cases predominates a utilitarian vision, in which conservation is considered an incompatible element with development. Taking this into consideration, the objective of this article is to analyze the visions of local actors about development and conservation. The methodological strategy consists in carrying out in-depth interviews with neighbors, recreational fishermen and fishing operators. From this, an optimal type of conservation for the reserve is proposed, which serves as a reference for others with similar characteristics.

Las escarificaciones mecánica, química y térmica son métodos eficientes para la salida de la dormición física y germinación de semillas; Background and aims: The occurrence of seeds with physical dormancy is an obstacle for the use and management of many plant species. Here, we studied the presence of physical dormancy in mericarps (seed-dispersal units) and seeds, the morphoanatomical structures responsible for physical dormancy, and the effects of possible methods for breaking dormancy in seeds of Malvastrum coromandelianum (Malvaceae). M&M: Imbibition essays were used to confirm the presence of physical dormancy in mericarps and seeds, and the morpho-anatomical seed structure was described by using a scanning electron microscopy. The effects of mechanical, chemical and thermal scarifications on seed germination and seed structure were also evaluated. Results: Mericarps and scarified seeds increased > 160% of their initial weight, whereas intact seeds increased < 40% of their initial weight. The presence of a palisade cell layer in seed coat and a water-gaps complex in the chalazal region were observed. Higher germination percentages and lower t50 were registered after mechanical scarification, followed by chemical and thermal scarifications (dry heat). Chemical and thermal scarifications caused the chalazal cap elimination and the contiguous cracks to form around the chalazal region; whereas the formation of a chalazal blister and its elimination were only observed after chemical scarification. Conclusions: Seeds of M. coromandelianum have physical dormancy. Water enters the seeds through a water-gap complex (Type III compound) located in the chalazal region. Mechanical, chemical and thermal scarifications are effective methods for breaking physical dormancy and increase germination.
The genus Dallocardia (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Cardiidae) in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean
Signorelli, Javier Hernan; Leme da Fonseca, Mauricio; Scarabino, Fabrizio; Dias Passos, Flavio
The taxonomy of the species assigned to the genus Dallocardia (Cardiidae: Trachycardiinae) recorded from the Argentinean and Magellanic biogeographical provinces was reviewed, revealing that two species are present: Dallocardia muricata (Linnaeus, 1758), well-known as widely distributed along the western Atlantic, and here considered as having its living southernmost limit of distribution in the southern Brazilian coast; and Dallocardia delicatula (EA Smith, 1915), a species resurrected as valid, to which D. manueli (Prado, 1993) is regarded as a junior synonym, occurring along southeastern and southern Brazil, Uruguay and in temperate waters of Argentina. The shells of both species are characterized in detail, differing in outline and rib morphology. Apart from this, a study of the functional anatomy of D. muricata was performed. This species is a moderately rapid shallow burrower from intertidal and subtidal regions in coarse, grassy and muddy sand bottoms, presenting adaptations to live in low-energy environments of sheltered bays and inlets. It has short siphons, with the incurrent crowned with simple, finger-like tentacles, which prevent, but do not block completely excess material and/or large particles from entering the pallial cavity. In addition to presenting a wide pedal gape and the two siphonal openings, D. muricata is the first known cardiid having a temporary fourth mantle gape, this acting as a supplementary incurrent opening, and also serving for expulsion of pseudofaeces. Compared to the labial palps, the ctenidia in this species are large and involved in processing the bulk of material entering the mantle cavity. The densely folded labial palps are indicative that D. muricata deals with moderate to considerable amounts of material. D. muricata is a hermaphroditic bivalve species.
Poder político, tiranía y bien común en Francisco Suárez: Diferencias y semejanzas con el origen del concepto de soberanía en Jean Bodin; Political Power, Tyranny and Common Good in Francisco Suarez Differences and Similarities with the Origin of the Concept of Sovereignty in Jean Bodin
Juri, Yamila Eliana
Nos interesa confrontar esta doctrina con la de un autor contemporáneo a Suárez y clásico por sus aportes a la noción de soberanía de la República como lo fue Jean Bodin, con sus Seis Libros de la República.; is paper outlines Suárez’s doctrine on the exercise of sovereign power in the ideological context of the so–called School of Salamanca, focusing on the feasibility of resistance to it, in cases of tyranny and linking such resistance to the fundamental key of the political community that is the common good, to which the sovereign power is subject to. We are interested in confronting this doctrine with that of an author contemporary to Suarez and considered a classic for his contributions to the notion of sovereignty of the Republic, as was Jean Bodin, with his Six Books of the Republic .
The s - d exchange model as the underlying mechanism of magnetoresistance in ZnO doped with alkali metals
Zapata, María Cecilia; Nieva, Gladys Leonor; Ferreyra, Jorge Mario; Villafuerte, Manuel Jose; Lanoel, Lucio; Bridoux, German
High field magnetoresistance has been studied in epitaxial n-type ZnO:Na and ZnO:Li thin films in a temperature range between 4 K and 150 K. The resulting negative magnetoresistance can be well fitted using a semiempirical model of Khosla and Fischer based on third order contributions to the s-d exchange Hamiltonian. The parameters obtained from this model were carefully analyzed. One of these parameters is related to a ratio between electron mobilities at zero field (a non-exchange scattering mobility and an exchange or spin dependent one ). From Hall effect measurements was obtained, displaying a weak temperature dependence in accordance with highly n-doped ZnO while the extracted exhibits an anomalous T-dependence. On the other hand, our magnetoresistance data cannot be properly fitted using Kawabata´s expression based on a weak-localization model.

Ovulation is considered an inflammatory, cytokine-mediated event.Cytokines, which are recognized as growth factors with immunoregulatory properties, are involved in many cellular processes at the ovarian level. In this sense, cytokines affect fertility and are involved in the development of different ovarian disorders such as bovine cystic ovarian disease (COD). Because it has been previously demonstrated that ovarian cells represent both sources and targets of cytokines, the aim of this study was to examine the expression of several cytokines, including IL-1β, IL-1RA, IL-1RI, IL-1RII, IL-4 and IL-8, in ovarian follicular structures from cows with spontaneous COD. The protein expression of these cytokines was evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Additionally, IL-1β, IL-4 and IL-8concentrations in follicular fluid (FF) and serumwere determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). In granulosa and theca cells, IL-1RI, IL-1RII, IL-1RA and IL-4 expression levels were higher in cystic follicles than in the control dominant follicles. The serumand FF concentrations of IL-1β and IL-4 showed no differences between groups, whereas IL-8 concentration was detected only in FF of cysts from cows with COD.The FF and serumconcentrations of IL-1β and IL-8 showed no significant differences, whereas IL-4 concentration was higher in FF than in serum in both the control and COD groups. These results evidenced an altered expression of cytokines in ovaries of cows with COD that could contribute to the pathogenesis of this disease.
Therapeutic targets to reduce the contribution of pulmonary neutrophilic inflammation towards obesity-associated co-morbidities: a mini-review
Claveles Casas, Florencia Nahir; Barrera, Florencia Soledad; López, Cristofer Martín; Chacon, Inalen del Valle; Di Sciullo, Maria Paula; Ramirez, Dario; Gomez-Mejiba, Sandra Esther
Epidemiology and experimental models have shown a close link between adipose tissue inflammation, systemic inflammation and pulmonary neutrophilic inflammation, which predispose obese patients to pulmonary diseases, obesity-associated co-morbidities and cancer. Increased content and activation of neutrophils in the lung microvasculature, resulting from peripheral activation of neutrophils, and increased adhesion of neutrophils to the lung microvasculature are important factors explaining the increased susceptibility of obese patients towards respiratory diseases and loss of insulin sensitivity. Mechanism-based therapies to break this link are urgently needed to reduce pulmonary damage in obesity, due to the growing prevalence of obesity world-wide. Current research suggests that these approaches should be focused on, one or more of the following: reduction of macrophage activation at the adipose tissue, healthy growing of adipose tissue by induction of Nrf-2, inhibition of NF-?B activation, reduction of circulating neutrophil activation, blocking adhesins/selectins, inhibition of neutrophil activation by targeting NADPH oxidase-2 activation, inhibition of myeloperoxidase activity and scavenging of hypochlorous acid. These strategies are expected to reduce adipose tissue inflammation, peripheral inflammation, pulmonary neutrophilic inflammation and obesity-associated co-morbidities.
In-situ Electron Microscopy Observation of the Redox Process in Plasmonic Heterogeneous-Photo-Sensitive Nanoparticles
Muraca, Diego; Scaffardi, Lucia Beatriz; Santillán, Jesica María José; Muñetón Arboleda, David; Schinca, Daniel Carlos; Bettini, Jefferson
Observation of relevant phenomena related with dynamical redox process in a plasmonic heterogeneous-photocatalyst system composed by silver nanoparticles (NPs) around and in contact with amorphous silver chloride NPs are reported by in-situ transmission electron microscopy. During this process, nanobubbles are initially produced inside the silver chloride NPs, which immediately begin to move within the amorphous phase. Besides, silver atoms inside the silver chloride NPs start to migrate out the occupied volume leaving a space behind, which is filled by crystalline regions of silver chloride located between the pre-existing silver NPs. During the observation time, fast-nucleation, movement, growth, and fast-dissolution of silver NPs take place. Specific space correlation with silver mass loss (or gain) when a new NP is formed (or dissolved), was detected in different regions during the reaction. This mass loss (or gain) takes place on certain places of pre-existing silver NPs. All these phenomena were observed for a configuration comprising at least two silver NPs separated few nanometers apart by a silver chloride NP.
Redox-Driven Reversible Gating of Solid-State Nanochannels

The design of an electrochemically addressable nanofluidic diode is proposed, which allows tunable and nanofluidic operations via redox gating under electrochemical control. The fabrication process involves the modification of an asymmetric gold-coated solid-state nanopore with a thin layer of a redox polymer, poly(vinylferrocene) (PVFc). The composite nanochannel acts as a gate electrode by changing the electrochemical state and, consequently, the conversion/switching of ferrocene into ferricenium units upon the application of different voltages. It is shown that the electrochemical input accurately controls the surface charge density of the nanochannel walls with a predictable concomitant effect on the rectification properties. PVFc-based nanofluidic devices are able to discriminate the passage of anionic species through the nanochannel in a qualitative and quantitative manner by simply switching the redox potential of the PVFc layer. Experimental data confirmed that a rapid and reversible modulation of the ionic transport regimes can be easily attained by changing the applied potential. This applied potential plays the role of the gate voltage (Vg) in field-effect transistors (FET), so these nanofluidic channels behave as ionic FETs. Depending on the Vg values, the iontronic behavior can be switched between ohmic and diode-like regimes. We believe that this system illustrates the potential of redox-active polymers integrated into nanofluidic devices as plausible, simple, and versatile platforms to create electrochemically addressable nanofluidic devices for multiple applications.
